Before ‘Beyond The Spider-Verse,’ Miles Morales Already Delivered His Boldest Story

In Short
  • 'The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story' was released online in 2024, showcasing a vulnerable side of Miles Morales.
  • The short film focuses on Miles experiencing a panic attack, emphasizing mental health over traditional superhero action.
  • It highlights that true heroism can exist alongside fear and struggle, redefining what it means to be a superhero.

As fans anxiously anticipate the release of ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ in cinemas, they might have overlooked a smaller, yet no less impactful, Miles Morales narrative that has already been released.

The ‘Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story’ was released online in 2024 and lasts just over seven minutes. However, within that brief period, it does something very daring: it allows a superhero to disintegrate. And honestly? Miles may be at his best when he is vulnerable.

The Spider Within is more focused, unlike ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,’ which amazed viewers with its multiversal mess and spectacular animation. Endless variants do not exist. No collapsing dimensions. Just Miles, crushed, nervous, and under pressure.

The short focuses on a panic attack that Miles is having, which is visually depicted by a dark manifestation of his fears. It is close and awkward in the best way.

It does not pose the question of how Spider-Man saves the world but how he saves himself. Superhero narratives tend to flourish on spectacle, yet this chapter breaks the action to dive directly and unfiltered into the subject of mental health.

To younger viewers, in particular, it is a revolution to watch a hero struggle with anxiety. Miles is not only avoiding villains, but he is also avoiding pressure, secrecy, and the tiring juggle between duty and identity. It’s raw. It’s honest. And it lingers with you.

‘Spider Within’ Shows Why Vulnerability Is Marvel’s Real Superpower

The most interesting aspect of this strategy is that it reflects one of the most successful storytelling tools of Marvel, which is to base large-scale heroes in deeply human struggles.

‘Iron Man 3’ shocked the viewers several years ago, as it paid attention to Tony Stark’s PTSD following the Battle of New York. Seeing a genius billionaire Avenger having panic attacks redefined what a hero in the MCU was.

More recently, ‘Thunderbolts*’ made emotional trauma and mental instability the main themes. ‘Spider Within’ is no exception to the philosophy. It knows that power does not eliminate fear. Fear does not negate power. In fact, the greater the responsibility, the heavier the emotional toll can be.

Miles Morales has already become a new generation Spider-Man. However, this short movie demonstrates something even more significant: you don’t have to be fearless to be heroic.
