Brie Larson Reveals The Real Challenge Behind Playing Captain Marvel

Brie Larson has always been a force, both on-screen as Captain Marvel and off-screen as an artist who embraces bold roles with conviction. But even the most heroic of heroes, it would appear, are not above the occasional lapse of reflection.

In a recent talk at SpaceCon 2025, the Oscar-winning actress looked back at the development of Carol Danvers and the greatest challenge she had to overcome. And it wasn’t an intergalactic war or a villain like Thanos, but the notion of not doing it all by herself.

Larson’s portrayal of Captain Marvel, introduced in 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel’ and solidified in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, immediately cemented the character as one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She came like a cosmic storm to fans, destroying the’ fleet of Thanos and almost killing him. But therein lies the problem. “You don’t want a character who has no flaws,” she explained.

“It got to the point where if Captain Marvel is in a fight, she’s going to win every single time. Every time. And so, it felt like her biggest challenge then would be learning to lean on other people.” For Larson, that challenge mirrors real life. “I think it’s an important message for people to realize that even the best of us have limitations. And not one person can do everything,” she said. “We need everybody. It takes all of us and all our superpowers to make this planet what it is.”

This degree of honesty is not only refreshing but it is groundbreaking in the superhero genre. Larson redefines power as not dominance, but the ability to share responsibility. ‘The Marvels’ was a wonderful reflection of this theme, as Carol Danvers was paired with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan. What started as a show about cosmic energy turned into a tale of sisterhood, vulnerability, and collective power. “In this case, you’re trusting two women that your heart is connected to,” Larson said. “It’s like they’re her sisters. And so, it feels really vulnerable. You want to step in, but every time she tries to step in, they literally switch places and the other person has to handle it.”

Fans Believe Captain Marvel’s Story Is Far From Over

‘The Marvels’ did not become a box office hit like ‘Avengers: Endgame’. However, its emotional storytelling has earned new respect among the audience, and the recent words of Larson have only increased it. Now, Marvel fans can’t wait to find out what she will do next in the MCU, particularly with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ coming up. Brie Larson was not listed in the original cast announcement for ‘Doomsday’.

The only confirmed ‘Marvels’ cast member to date is Kelsey Grammer, returning as Beast with MCU veterans Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, and others. However, fans are convinced Marvel Studios is once again playing coy. The theory was revived when Larson shared an apparently harmless photo on Election Day on November 4, one that could have had a not-so-subtle hint. The picture showed her wearing a hoodie and long blonde hair, Carol Danvers’ signature look rather than her recent short hairstyle.

Marvel will always keep secrets. However, the caption and the hairstyle were sufficient to send fans into a frenzy. In the event that it is true, the character would have a full-circle moment when Larson returns, not as an all-powerful cosmic savior, but as a team player in a multiverse crisis. And, after all, the supposed role of Victor Von Doom in the ‘Doomsday’ foreshadows stakes that even Captain Marvel cannot fight single-handedly.
