“It Definitely Got Misconstrued”: Chris Hemsworth On Thor’s Fate In ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has always thrived on speculation. However, sometimes, even the stars of the franchise can unintentionally throw fans into a frenzy. That’s exactly what happened earlier this year when Chris Hemsworth, the long-time face of Thor, shared a seemingly innocent video that many interpreted as a farewell to the God of Thunder.

Now, Hemsworth is setting the record straight and assuring fans that Thor’s journey is far from over.

Back in May 2025, Chris Hemsworth took to social media to share a video montage celebrating his return to the MCU ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The video, filled with behind-the-scenes clips, fan moments, and a reflective voiceover, came across to many fans as a farewell message. Given that Thor has been absent from the big screen since 2022’s ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’. Additionally, the stakes in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ are reportedly monumental.

So, unsurprisingly, theories about Thor’s demise quickly flooded the internet. Was Hemsworth hinting at Thor’s death? Speculation ran wild. Now, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hemsworth addressed the unintended fallout from the video. “It was certainly not the intent. To be honest, my social media team assembled some footage and were like, ‘Oh, this could be cool. We’ll put some stuff up and thank the fans.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, cool. It’s been great,” he explained.

So we penned it together, and off I went to do something else… Then I had a few people ask me about it, and someone on my team said, ‘Ugh, we’ve given the wrong impression here,’” he added. The actor clarified that the video was meant to be a moment of gratitude, not goodbye. “It definitely got misconstrued,” he said. That moment of clarity from Hemsworth is a huge relief for fans who have followed Thor’s evolution. After all, Hemsworth’s portrayal has become one of the most beloved elements of the entire franchise.

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor Might Be Back For More Than Just ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

With Chris Hemsworth confirming he’s not going anywhere just yet, the path is clear for Thor to make a dramatic return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, scheduled for release in 2026. The stakes in the film are expected to be sky-high, with the Russo brothers back at the helm. Though details about Thor’s exact role remain tightly under wraps, rumors suggest he will play a pivotal part in the multiversal chaos at the heart of the story.

Some even speculate that Thor may be crucial to the formation of new Avengers teams or the defeat of Doctor Doom. Interestingly, even though Thor hasn’t yet been confirmed for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, many fans believe Marvel is simply holding that information back to avoid spoiling Doomsday’s outcome. With ‘Secret Wars’ expected to reboot or significantly reshape the MCU, Thor’s future could still hang in the balance.

However, it seems increasingly likely that Hemsworth will continue beyond the Multiverse Saga. While it’s possible that a new actor could take up the hammer in some distant future, Hemsworth’s recent comments show he’s still very much committed to the role for now. As he put it himself, “This journey has been the biggest part of my career. So [the video] was a moment of gratitude, and it wasn’t anything else.” For now, fans can breathe a sigh of relief: Thor is back, and Chris Hemsworth isn’t done.
