‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Chooses Street-Level Stakes Over Multiverse Chaos

In Short
  • 'Daredevil: Born Again' focuses on gritty, street-level storytelling rather than multiverse themes.
  • Showrunner Dario Scardapane emphasizes the importance of grounded narratives in a real city.
  • Cast members have differing views on multiverse concepts, with Vincent D'Onofrio open to exploring new versions of Kingpin.

Marvel might be plunging into the depths of multiversal chaos, yet not all heroes must go that way, and ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is showing why.

As Season 2 continues to gain traction and larger MCU ties are on the horizon, fans have begun to question whether the Hell’s Kitchen defender might one day be dragged into universe-hopping battles. However, showrunner Dario Scardapane says that is a direction he would not want to go in, at least not in the near future.

Daredevil’s Grounded Story Is Its Biggest Strength

To Scardapane, the charm of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is its gritty street-level, rather than cosmic, nature. His idea of Matt Murdock is not to rescue timelines but to find his way through the moral gray in a city that is real. “I don’t necessarily want them on another planet, I always want them in New York. I want them in the city that they grew up in,” he told CBR.

It is precisely that grounded approach that has made Daredevil shine in the MCU. Where other heroes fight gods and variants, Murdock’s fights are personal, immediate, and perilously human. You can’t punch your way out of corruption, trauma, or justice, and that’s where the show thrives.

Scardapane’s position is also indicative of a bigger creative issue: when you open up unlimited possibilities like the multiverse, the stakes begin to feel weightless. When anything can be undone or substituted, then does anything really count? That is a risk that he is obviously not ready to take.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Cast Is Split On The Multiverse Question

Interestingly, not all those involved are equally hesitant. Vincent D’Onofrio, who portrays Wilson Fisk, has shown interest in trying different versions of Kingpin. To him, the concept is creatively thrilling. It’s an opportunity to spin an already complicated character in new directions. Charlie Cox, on the other hand, appears to be more in line with the view of the showrunner.

“I mean, I would entertain a version of Murdock and Fisk that’s set in, like, Lower East Side, late 60s, early 70s,” he said. “He’s an up-and-coming investigator, and Kingpin’s just beginning to run a crew. That would be fun.” While he acknowledges that multiverse storytelling can work, he’s cautious about what it might cost the series.

To Cox, Daredevil’s power lies in its realistic tension. This can easily be lost when the laws of reality begin to bend too much. Marvel does not require all the stories to be noisier and bigger. There are times when the only thing to do is to remain where you are, in a dark alley, with everything at stake.
