‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Showrunner Reveals Why Karen Page Was Never Meant To Be A Sidekick

In Short
  • Karen Page's character will evolve significantly in Season 2 of 'Daredevil: Born Again'.
  • Karen is portrayed as a strong, independent character who challenges Matt Murdock rather than serving as a sidekick or love interest.
  • The upcoming season promises a fresh and unexpected take on her.

As anticipation builds for Season 2 of ‘Daredevil: Born Again‘, much of the conversation has centered on Mayor Fisk’s tightening grip on New York. But behind the political chaos and looming street war, showrunner Dario Scardapane is steering attention toward a different transformation.

It’s time for the evolution of Karen Page. And the way he describes her journey makes one thing clear: Season 2 won’t just bring Karen back, it will redefine her.

Karen Page Is A Lot More Than Matt Murdock’s Love Interest

In ‘Daredevil: Born Again‘ Season 2, Matt Murdock will face a city transformed by power and politics, with Wilson Fisk now serving as Mayor of New York City. But according to Scardapane, the larger emotional arc belongs to Karen Page and how she grows in response to everything happening around her.

Early in Season 1’s development, Karen was not positioned to have a significant role. That changed when Scardapane stepped in during the creative overhaul. Speaking to SFX Magazine, he revealed that when he realized Karen was originally not a big part of the narrative, or possibly not part of it at all, he immediately pushed back.

He stated how he reacted to the idea of not having Karen on the first season and suggested, “Guys, guys, guys, we can’t do that! Karen’s got to be a part of this world for a lot of reasons, and we didn’t have as much of her as I would have liked in season one”.

Talking about her importance and evolution in the second season, the showrunner cleared everything by not calling her a sidekick or a mere love interest on the show. “In my mind, and in Debs’s mind, she’s never been a sidekick; she’s never been a girlfriend. She’s always been somebody who both mirrors and pushes Murdock, not always in the best way”, said Scardapane.

Yes, Karen Page is a lot more than Murdock’s romantic interest. And her character might pan out beautifully in the second season. Talking about her involvement in the upcoming season, Scardapane promised that fans will be digging the forthcoming Karen Page.

Scardapane made it clear that Karen’s evolution in Season 2 builds directly on everything that came before. She complemented Matt Murdock; sometimes in ways that complicated his life rather than simplifying it. That perspective reframes her entire arc.

She has consistently challenged Matt rather than orbiting him. She has called him out, questioned his decisions, and made bold choices of her own. Over time, she transformed from a secretary into a journalist with sharp investigative instincts. She developed a strong legal knowledge base and now stands as a lawyer in her own right. She does not just support Matt’s mission; she confronts it, tests it, and sometimes redirects it. Season 2 will push that growth even further.

Scardapane teased that the new Karen Page feels fresh and unexpected. Talking about her character development, he described it as a “curveball that you haven’t seen before”.

With the return of Jessica Jones, fans were more interested in seeing Karen as a redhead in the official promos and photos for the upcoming season. Tthe hype continues to grow. Only time will tell how the second season turns out.
