The Hulk has been a cornerstone of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its inception. But the journey to his current portrayal wasn’t without drama. Edward Norton’s brief tenure as Bruce Banner marked the character’s early days in the MCU.
However, after just one film, Norton stepped away, and Mark Ruffalo stepped in. Ruffalo’s take redefined the role in ways that have resonated with fans for over a decade.
Edward Norton Was Not Satisfied With Marvel’s Plan For The Hulk, Prompting His Exit
Edward Norton’s portrayal of Bruce Banner in ‘The Incredible Hulk’ brought weight and complexity to the character. While the film may not have reached the critical acclaim anticipated, Norton’s performance was widely praised for grounding the larger-than-life Hulk.

Yet, behind the scenes, there was a lot of creative tension. Norton, known for his meticulous approach to roles, reportedly wanted greater creative control over the film’s direction. He was heavily involved in rewriting parts of the script and advocated for a deeper exploration of Bruce Banner’s psyche.
However, Marvel Studios prioritized a faster-paced, action-oriented film to appeal to a wider audience. Even the director of the film acknowledged Norton’s passion. Despite this, Marvel ultimately opted to part ways with Norton. Marvel’s statement emphasized that the decision wasn’t financial.
They wanted to find someone who could thrive as part of an ensemble cast. The studio’s vision for the Hulk clashed with Norton’s desire for a more introspective take on the character. Additionally, Norton’s general reluctance to commit to sequels likely played a role in his departure.
In a 2019 interview with The New York Times, Norton reflected on his MCU experience, revealing that he had envisioned a two-film arc for the Hulk. This vision focused on exploring the character’s evolution as a “conscious dreamer,” an idea that never materialized. While Norton expressed gratitude for the experience, it was clear that his vision for the Hulk was fundamentally different from Marvel’s.
Why Mark Ruffalo Was The Perfect Fit For Hulk
With Edward Norton’s departure, Marvel turned to Mark Ruffalo to fill Bruce Banner’s shoes. Ruffalo’s Hulk debuted in ‘The Avengers’. He also brought a distinct warmth and relatability to the role and proved to be an ideal choice for the character.

Interestingly, Ruffalo had previously also been considered for the role of Bruce Banner in ‘The Incredible Hulk’. However, Marvel initially opted for a bigger name in Norton. Moreover, Ruffalo’s chemistry with the MCU’s star-studded cast, including Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, proved essential as the franchise expanded.
From ‘The Avengers’ to ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and beyond, Ruffalo’s Banner has become a fan favorite. Over the years, Ruffalo’s portrayal of Bruce Banner has allowed the character to evolve in ways that might not have been possible under Norton’s vision.
