How Mahershala Ali’s ‘Blade’ Became Marvel’s Most Cursed Movie

For years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has teased the arrival of one of its most iconic antiheroes, the half-human, half-vampire hunter ‘Blade‘. When Mahershala Ali donned the Blade cap and announced himself as the next Daywalker, fans were very pleased.

The casting was perfect and the excitement was palpable. The future looked bright. However, now, more than six years later, that excitement has faded into silence. The ‘Blade’ movie, once expected to reinvent Marvel’s supernatural corner, has become a ghost story of its own. November 7, 2025, was supposed to mark its release in theaters. Instead, now the date serves as a reminder of what could have been.

When Marvel Studios announced Mahershala Ali as Blade, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. Ali, a two-time Oscar winner, carried the gravitas and intensity that the role demanded. He was the ideal heir to Wesley Snipes’ legacy, capable of blending cold precision with emotional depth. The project promised to explore a darker, edgier side of the MCU, one that fans had long been waiting for. However, almost immediately, the film became plagued by setbacks.

Its first director, Bassam Tariq, exited the project in 2022, just weeks before production was set to begin. Reports suggested creative disagreements, followed by multiple script rewrites from different writers, including Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Beau DeMayo, and Michael Green. Each new draft reportedly took the story in a different direction. Some were more grounded, others more supernatural. However, none seemed to fully satisfy Marvel Studios or Ali himself.

What began as a straightforward reboot soon turned into a production nightmare. Filming dates were announced, delayed, and canceled. The movie jumped from 2023 to 2024, then to 2025, before eventually being removed from Marvel’s release calendar entirely. Now, with the date that should have been its premiere day passing, fans can’t help but feel the sting of disappointment. For Ali, who turned 51 this year, the wait is becoming more than just frustrating; it’s discouraging.

What Went Wrong And Why ‘Blade’ Still Matters

The ‘Blade’ reboot’s troubles reveal something deeper about the current state of the MCU. Marvel, once a model of consistency and confidence, seems to be grappling with a creative identity crisis. The Multiverse Saga has been a patchwork of high-concept ideas, reboots, and crossover ambitions. However, it’s struggled to deliver the same cultural and emotional punch as the Infinity Saga. In that landscape, ‘Blade’ could have been a game-changer.

It offered Marvel the chance to venture into unexplored territory, horror, gothic action, and moral ambiguity, while also diversifying its tone. With projects like ‘Werewolf by Night and ‘Agatha All Along’ expanding the supernatural realm, ‘Blade’ was meant to be the anchor of that world. Instead, it has become its biggest question mark. The tragedy lies in the potential. A modern ‘Blade’ film led by Ali could have bridged old and new Marvel fans alike.

It could have introduced new vampire lore, expanded the Midnight Sons concept, and perhaps even tied into darker corners of the multiverse. However, all of that remains wishful thinking for now. Without production updates, casting confirmations, or even a script locked down, the project feels frozen in time. Marvel’s silence hasn’t helped either; each missed update or skipped event deepens fan skepticism.
