“Literally, It Came To Me One Day”: Hugh Jackman On Why He Agreed To Do ‘Deadpool And Wolverine’ Despite His Character’s Iconic Death In ‘Logan’

For years, Hugh Jackman‘s goodbye to Wolverine in ‘Logan’ seemed like the definitive end. The gritty, emotional send-off left fans heartbroken but satisfied. The character’s end was so iconic that even Iron Man’s death was inspired by it.

However, as it later turned out, it wasn’t how Wolverine met his end as he is set to hot our screens again in the highly anticipated ‘Deadpool and Wolverine‘. Despite being one of the most iconic death scenes in the history of the Marvel universe, it wasn’t a conclusive one for Jackman’s character. Here’s what the actor has to say about the plot and what fueled his return.

Hugh Jackman initially claimed that he “didn’t miss it for a long time” while talking about his role as Wolverine. He poured his heart and soul into Wolverine for over 17 years, delivering iconic performances across multiple films. And ‘Logan’ served as a powerful and fitting conclusion to his personal Wolverine journey.

Moreover, he achieved closure, a rare feat in the superhero genre. However, despite the satisfactory end, it seems like Ryan Reynolds‘ persuasiveness got to him. “I didn’t miss it for a long time. And then, literally, it came to me one day as I was driving down to the beach. I knew I wanted to do this. I literally stopped the car, got out, and called Ryan,” Hugh claimed while talking to Variety.

Whatever the trigger, it’s clear that a new vision for Wolverine emerged, one that Jackman found irresistible. The dynamic between Wolverine and Deadpool is pure comic-book gold, and thanks to Jackman’s trigger, we would now be able to see it on screen.

Jackman’s excitement to reunite with Reynolds also speaks volumes about the potential for their on-screen chemistry, which also been quite visible as the two promote their upcoming film the most creatively genius ways.

Despite the excitement about ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘, it is clear that Hugh Jackman isn’t one to phone it in. His comment about needing a “good reason” for this return echoes the sentiment many fans share. ‘Logan’ was a masterpiece, and any follow-up needs to justify its existence within the established narrative.

Hugh has definitely had a cautious and thoughtful approach to Wolverine’s return, and we can now be sure that he is ensuring it complements his character’s death. Besides, his return also raises a plethora of questions. Will this be a one-off appearance in ‘Deadpool And Wolverine‘ or will it lead to further Wolverine adventures? How will this new portrayal fit within the existing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)?

Fans will have to wait until the film is released to find out the fate that their beloved superhero holds.
