“I Didn’t Know They Were Gonna Go That Far”: ‘Logan’ Co-Writer Talks About ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Opening Scene Where They Dug Up Wolverine’s Remains

When it comes to superhero send-offs, few movies hit the emotional mark quite like ‘Logan.’ The 2017 film was the supposed farewell of Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine, giving the iconic character a fitting and powerful ending. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ the latest Marvel film to shake things up and bring Wolverine back into the spotlight, but with a twist that only Deadpool could pull off.

The new movie kicks off with an unexpected scene where Deadpool literally digs up Wolverine’s corpse from ‘Logan,’ setting the tone for the chaotic adventure that follows. Naturally, fans were on edge about how this would affect the legacy of ‘Logan,’ and it turns out, so was Michael Green, the co-writer of the 2017 hit. But despite the warnings he received, Green’s reaction was far from what people expected. Instead of being upset, he saw the opening scene as a massive compliment.

In an interview with IGN, Green shared how some people in his circle were concerned about his reaction to the film’s bold opening. “People had warned me ahead of time, ‘Uh, I don’t know how you’re gonna feel about the opening [of Deadpool & Wolverine],‘” Green recalled.

His initial response was pretty laid-back, “I’m like, ‘I think I know what’s gonna happen.'” But even he wasn’t prepared for the extent of Deadpool’s antics. “And I did not know! I didn’t know they were gonna go that far,” Green admitted.

You weren’t meant to take seriously that they were, like, digging him up, and that it was really him,” Green explained. He emphasized that the filmmakers weren’t trying to undermine ‘Logan’s’ ending but rather acknowledging its greatness.

It felt less like they were trying to change the ending of ‘Logan’ as they were contending with not feeling that they wanted to make a movie as good as they felt ‘Logan’ was, which is a huge compliment! I felt like it was nothing but complimentary.

Michael Green also praised the film for being a blast to watch. “When we saw it in a full theatre, people went bananas to everything. It’s great. It’s a great franchise, like, more, please!” He even joked about how grateful he was that the film didn’t take any jabs at his involvement in the notorious Green Lantern movie which were present in ‘Deadpool 2.’

For Hugh Jackman, returning to the role of Wolverine in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ without messing with the ‘Logan’ timeline was a top priority. He explained to SiriusXM that the Marvel universe’s timeline tricks made it possible to revisit the character without altering his poignant farewell.

Now we can go back because, you know, it’s science. So, I don’t have to screw with the ‘Logan’ timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too.”

Even Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had cautioned Jackman about the risks of returning to the role, saying, “Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back. You had the greatest ending in history with ‘Logan.’ That’s not something we should undo.”

However, Marvel swiftly brought Hugh Jackman to the MCU and gave fans one of the best versions of Wolverine. Fans are now eagerly waiting for Jackman’s new adventure in the future projects.
