The news that Tom Hiddleston‘s Loki would be back in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ was met with immediate excitement, but also some confusion. And, in fact, ‘Loki’ Season 2 appeared to be a rather tragic, almost religious conclusion to his journey.
So what does it mean to bring him back now? The solution can be larger than a mere cameo. It can entirely redefine the way the Marvel Cinematic Universe characterizes Loki.
Loki Might Finally Become An Avenger

The former God of Mischief, Loki, had become something completely different by the end of his Disney+ series. He became the silent protector of the multiverse, the God of Stories. It was a lovely, sweet, and sad ending. He preferred solitude instead of anarchy. For a character who was presented as the villain in ‘The Avengers’, it was the ultimate redemption.

This is why his return in ‘Doomsday’ is so major. Should Loki leave his throne at the end of the world, or be driven out by an antagonist such as Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., the burden of that sacrifice is bound to be changed by Marvel. His arc becomes softened at the end. The isolation that characterized his development might not be forever. And yet, maybe that’s the point.
Loki’s MCU Evolution Could Reach Its Most Surprising Stage In ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

The rumors about ‘Doomsday’ include a list of participants that includes Thor, Captain America, Shang-Chi, Ant-Man, and Loki. That is not merely a plot twist; should it be true? It’s poetic. Loki entered the MCU in need of a throne and was eager to take over the Earth to get it. Now, more than a decade later, he could stand beside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as one of them. That symmetry is difficult to disregard.

Thor is fighting alongside a version of his brother who never truly shared those original films with him. The emotional tension in itself would be electric. More to the point, this action would re-establish the identity of Loki once again.
He would not just be the antihero who is redeemed or the cosmic caretaker. He would be something different: a founding Avenger in another time. Something about that possibility is very satisfying. Loki has never been able to escape the clutches of fate. Perhaps ‘Doomsday’ isn’t undoing his story; it’s expanding it.
