What Is “Brat Summer”?
In case you didn’t get Ruffalo’s reference, we’re happy to help! British artist Charli XCX’s smash album ‘Brat,‘ which was released on June 7 and debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts, is the inspiration behind the brat summer craze. The album’s unique yet understated cover art, which features the word “brat” in low-res Arial font on a lime green background, really captured the attention of fans and led to the trend being invented.
According to Charli, to be a “brat” is to be “just like, that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes, who feels herself, but then also maybe has a breakdown, but kind of parties through it. It is very honest, very blunt. A little bit volatile. Like, does dumb things. But it’s brat. You’re brat. That’s brat.”
The trend has even found its way to the White House as Kamala Harris got Charli’s support. She tweeted “Kamala Harris Is Brat” and Ms. Harris embraced the attention she received after the tweet. She changed the backdrop of her campaign’s official X profile to brat green and featured a song from the singer’s album ‘Brat‘ in one of her team’s TikTok videos.
