Seven years after Marvel Studios surprised fans by announcing Mahershala Ali as the MCU’s ‘Blade‘, the project remains one of the franchise’s biggest unanswered questions. The vampire hunter has been creatively remodeled, changed directors, and has had delayed release dates. However, he has still not made his proper on-screen debut.

Now, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has released the most honest statement about the long and frustrating process of the film’s development. He reveals just how disappointing it’s been for everyone involved.

Kevin Feige Explains Why ‘Blade’ Became Marvel’s Most Challenging Movie

In the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Feige didn’t bother to conceal his sentiments about the stalled reboot. He said he feels like a “failure” for not making the project into a production with Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali since announcing the actor as ‘Blade’ in 2019.

“I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala,” he shared. The film has had a particularly rough development journey, with several different story ideas and directors proposed along the way.

Over time, ‘Blade’ was moved from a period-set supernatural adventure to a modern-day story in the MCU before finally being taken off Marvel’s schedule entirely. Ali voiced Blade in the post-credits of ‘Eternals’, yet his fans are still waiting for him to take on the iconic role on screen.

In the meantime, the unexpected return of Wesley Snipes in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ marked the first time Blade was seen in the MCU, serving as both a nostalgic celebration and a playful reminder of the reboot’s uncertain future.

Marvel Still Has Several Paths To Introduce Blade

The standalone movie is still up in the air, but Blade’s future in the MCU might not be done. There are several chances that Mahershala Ali could finally get a solo adventure, as some supernatural projects are on Marvel’s roadmap.

The ongoing delay is no doubt frustrating for fans. However, the fact that Feige is openly admitting to the setbacks indicates that Marvel knows what they’re looking for in one of their most iconic characters. His MCU debut will eventually pay off for the years of waiting, whether it’s through an Avengers movie or a long-awaited solo film.
