As the MCU prepares to release ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, the comics are being examined by fans to see what might be next. And with the final teaser, everybody is looking at Scott Summers aka Cyclops.
In Cyclops #1, the long-time X-Men leader is weaker than ever before. Scott is stranded, hunted, and deprived of his most valuable weapon. It’s a crisis that may radically alter the functioning of his powers. And honestly? This was long overdue.
Cyclops’ Latest Crisis Might Redefine Him Forever

The new problem reminds the readers of two important facts about Cyclops. To begin with, his optic blasts are no laughing matter. Marvel repeats that the concussive power of them is comparable to a hydrogen bomb. The damage is incredible when Scott opens his full potential.

However, the second reminder is more significant: he is not able to control it. Due to the plane crash that killed his parents, Scott had brain damage as a child, and he relies solely on his ruby quartz visor to hold back and control his explosions. Without it, he must keep his eyes shut, or risk catastrophic devastation.
That dependency is the core of the problem as his Quinjet is shot by the New Reavers. His visor is ruined in the wreckage. The most tactical member of the X-Men is suddenly left to grope in the dark. It’s a terrifying image. The leader who never lacked a plan can no longer even open his eyes.
Cyclops Is Getting A Power Upgrade Before Big Screen Return

But what should happen if this failure is a trap? The timing feels deliberate. With Cyclops expected to play a role in the MCU’s expanding mutant saga, potentially as part of the build-up to ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘, Marvel Comics may be preparing a reinvention.
Imagine a variant that does not require the visor anymore. Scott Summers could finally make use of his optic blasts at will.

It won’t be a weakness; it will be a full-fledged extension of himself. This could be one of the greatest developments in the history of the character.
The visor has been a symbol of control and restriction over the decades. Getting rid of that crutch would just be a cosmetic change; it would be growth.
