The seeds of Marvel Studios’ upcoming ‘Zodiac’ series might have been sown years before the project was even announced. The possible connection dates back to a 2013 Marvel One-Shot, ‘Agent Carter’, which included a short, interesting mention of Zodiac.

Now that Marvel Television is developing a new ‘Zodiac’ series for Disney+, this long-forgotten tidbit of the MCU is worth revisiting. Is it a mystery that the studio is returning to a story from more than 10 years ago, or is it just two stories with the same name? Either way, fans have an interesting connection to follow up on.

‘Agent Carter’ Introduced ‘Zodiac’ Back In 1946

‘Agent Carter’ is set in 1946, right after the events of ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, and follows Peggy Carter as she works for the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR). Peggy’s colleagues doubt her skills, and she goes on a treacherous mission on her own.

In the One-Shot, Carter must find a strange substance called Zodiac. It is never fully described, and its exact nature and meaning are open to speculation. With Marvel working on a project of the same name, there’s a reason to go back to that scene.

Will the new series finally shed some light on what Zodiac is and why it was important to the SSR? The two projects are not officially linked, but the fact that they share the same name makes it intriguing to think that they might be.

Could Zodiac Connect To The Super-Soldier Serum?

Another notion that could be explored is whether the strange substance is related to the Super-Soldier Serum that allowed Steve Rogers to become Captain America. The SSR’s involvement in enhanced-soldier experiments would not be out of place in the MCU, given the fact that another experimental formula is being used.

But that is only a guess. So far, Marvel has not confirmed that Zodiac is a surviving serum sample, or that Peggy Carter’s mission will be part of the new series. The upcoming Zodiac project is said to be about espionage, and its enigmatic logo has reportedly garnered some interest due to its possible ties to S.H.I.E.L.D.

The name also evokes the Zodiac group from Marvel Comics, whose members are the 12 astrological signs. It’s not certain if Marvel plans to tie all of these together. Still, revisiting an obscure reference from ‘Agent Carter’ could be an exciting way to expand the MCU’s spy mythology and give a forgotten mystery a new purpose.
