Why Marvel Postponed Developing ‘Nova’, ‘Strange Academy’, And ‘Terror Inc.’

Marvel Studios fans were hit with an unexpected twist earlier today when reports surfaced that three highly anticipated Disney+ shows won’t be going forward. The list of the shows included ‘Nova’, ‘Strange Academy’, and ‘Terror Inc.

All of these shows have been placed on hold.  While it’s not uncommon for projects to be paused or reworked, new details suggest these series were further along in development than previously believed.

According to Deadline, none of these projects had officially been greenlit. However, they weren’t just vague ideas floating around either. Marvel Studios has reportedly “shifted its priorities,” aiming for a more grounded and cost-effective approach to its streaming content.

Insider Daniel Richtman added that Marvel now prefers to see a pilot they’re satisfied with before fully committing to a project. However, the news is still a tough pill to swallow for fans eager to see these characters brought to life on screen. Each show had its own unique vision, and some big names were already being eyed for key roles.

One of the most exciting developments was ‘Nova’. The series would have followed Richard Rider in the aftermath of Thanos’ decimation of Xandar. It was a storyline that could have seamlessly woven into Marvel’s post-‘Avengers: Endgame‘ universe.

However, Rider wouldn’t have been alone in his fight. The show planned to introduce Sam Alexander, another popular Nova Corps member. Additionally, they were rumored to go against Annihilus and his terrifying Annihilation Wave. With so much groundwork seemingly laid, it’s disappointing that Nova has been shelved for now. That said, insiders remain optimistic that the project will move forward eventually.

Strange Academy’ was another ambitious project in development. This series would have taken Marvel’s mystical side to new heights, with Wong stepping into the role of headmaster at a wizarding school in New Orleans. The concept had clear influences from Harry Potter and would have focused on the next generation of young sorcerers.

Moreover, given Wong’s growing popularity in the MCU, ‘Strange Academy’ seemed like a natural evolution for his character. Then there was ‘Terror Inc.’, which may have been the boldest of the three. With ‘WandaVision’ writer Peter Cameron at the helm, this horror-leaning series was set to follow the immortal antihero Terror.

The show was pitched as a full-on horror experience for mature audiences, an exciting deviation from Marvel’s usual tone. Additionally, there were whispers that Terror would eventually join the Midnight Sons film. Now, both projects have been delayed.
