Marvel is already planning to explore the mythology of its latest cosmic hero with a new prequel comic related to the world of the ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’.
The next one-shot, Fantastic Four: First Foes: Shalla‑Bal #1, will focus on the origin story of the MCU variant of the Silver Surfer, providing fans with a better view of the character before she is introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Is Finally Exploring The Backstory Of MCU’s Silver Surfer

In contrast to the traditional Marvel Comics plot, in which the Silver Surfer is the noble alien Norrin Radd from planet Zenn-La, the MCU presented a twist to the story. In ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’, the cosmic herald is literally Shalla-Bal, a daring reinterpretation that instantly created a discussion among fans.

Now Marvel is about to tell us how she came to be the herald of Galactus, the dreadful Devourer of Worlds. Charles Soule will write the comic, and Mark Buckingham will illustrate it. The two creators have a long history of addressing big-scale Marvel stories.
According to Marvel’s description, it will show the tragic decision that Shalla-Bal made several years ago when she gave up her freedom to save her planet. For old school fans, that fateful deal is the heart of the Silver Surfer mythology. The plot of the character has always been based on sacrifice, duty, and the ghostly aftermath of serving a cosmic master.
Why Silver Surfer’s Story Still Resonates With Fans

The Silver Surfer has become one of the most iconic characters in the world of Marvel since he first appeared in the pages. The philosophical tone of the hero and his cosmic exploits made the character memorable in the late 1960s. It even earned the Surfer his own series that resonated with readers well beyond the usual superhero fanbase.

The character has been seen on the big screen previously, with the most notable appearance being in ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer’. Still, that version never really got to the emotional depth that fans attach to the character. The reinvention of the MCU brought a new face to the Surfer, played by Julia Garner. While the change was initially controversial, the performance was accepted by many viewers and the cosmic scale it introduced to the franchise.
Marvel now has the chance to develop that story with Fantastic Four: First Foes: Shalla-Bal #1 and provide the character with the rich background she deserves. In case the comic is successful, it might enhance the bond between the Fantastic Four world of the MCU and the expansive cosmic mythology that has always been at the heart of Marvel’s narrative.
