Mary Jane Watson’s New Arc Just Proved How She Doesn’t Need Spider-Man

Few comic book couples have achieved the iconic status of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. For decades, their romance has been at the heart of Spider-Man comics, defining entire eras of storytelling and inspiring countless adaptations across film, television, and video games.

It’s safe to say that MJ and Peter’s love story is one of the most celebrated romances in comic book history. However, their love has also been one of the most frequently interrupted, reimagined, and undone relationships in Marvel Comics. With Marvel’s more recent decision to separate MJ from Peter, it may be time to accept that Mary Jane shines brightest outside the shadow of Spider-Man.

Breaking Free From Peter Parker’s Orbit Might Be The Best Thing For Mary Jane As A Character

Marvel has never been shy about keeping Peter Parker single or struggling, as he works best as the underdog. This philosophy has often come at the expense of Mary Jane’s character. Whether through ‘One More Day’s controversial erasure of their marriage in 2007 or the awkward introduction of Paul Rabin as her new love interest in 2022, the comics have bent over backward to keep Peter and MJ apart.

For fans, Paul Rabin came across less as a fully fleshed-out partner and more as a placeholder. His too-perfect personality and lack of unique quirks left many feeling he was more cardboard than character. Yet, ironically, this controversial storyline gave Mary Jane something she’d long been denied: independence. By choosing Paul over Peter, MJ suddenly had a path that wasn’t defined by Spider-Man. While her relationship with Paul was divisive, it propelled her into her own adventures.

She became Jackpot, taking on superhero duties with Paul as her “man in the chair.” For the first time, she wasn’t just a supporting player in Peter’s story; she was the star of her own. That evolution reached another level when she briefly took on the mantle of All-New Venom. Venom himself acknowledged her creativity, resilience, and unique approach to crimefighting. In both stints as Jackpot and Venom, MJ proved she could handle danger and responsibility on her own terms.

These were no longer stories about Peter Parker’s girlfriend; they were about Mary Jane Watson becoming her own kind of hero. This independence matters. MJ has always had potential beyond her role as a love interest. She’s been an actress, a nightclub owner, and a fashion designer. However, time and again, these arcs were rolled back so she could return to Peter’s side. By stepping away from that cycle, MJ has finally been allowed to breathe as a character.

Mary Jane Deserves A Story That Belongs To Her

If Mary Jane were to fall back into Peter Parker’s arms now, it would risk undoing years of progress. When Peter and MJ are together, the spotlight inevitably shifts back to him. Even if she retained her Jackpot or Venom powers, the narrative gravity of Spider-Man’s world would always pull focus. That’s why her distance from Peter is not just refreshing, it’s necessary. For the first time in decades, Marvel has a chance to tell a Mary Jane story that isn’t a subplot in Spider-Man’s saga.

She’s proven capable of heroism, leadership, and making sacrifices just as weighty as Peter’s. She deserves an arc where she’s not defined by being the girlfriend, the wife, or the tragic loss in Peter’s endless cycle of suffering. While fans often argue that Peter Parker is strongest when he’s struggling, the same can be said of Mary Jane. She is at her most compelling when she’s forced to step out of Peter’s orbit and define herself.

That’s what made her stints as Jackpot and Venom so intriguing. If Marvel were to reunite them now, it could end up being another ‘One More Day’ moment. That infamous story reset Peter and MJ’s marriage, erasing years of growth for the sake of the status quo. A rushed reunion today could similarly erase Mary Jane’s hard-won independence. Instead, Marvel has a golden opportunity to lean into MJ’s newfound superhero identity,
