For months, fans have speculated that Chris Hemsworth might soon hang up the hammer. As some of the original Avengers, like Iron Man and Black Widow, are already dead, the impending danger of ‘Avengers: Secret Wars‘ is leaving many preparing to say goodbye to their favorite characters.
However, what would happen if Marvel somehow managed to provide Thor with a strong death scene, without actually writing him out?
Why Thor’s Next Big Moment Might Not Be A Goodbye

The Multiverse Saga provides the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a clever narrative loophole that has been crafted into it, one that can provide the emotional impact of Thor’s sacrifice and leave the core hero alive to be utilized in future tales. If Secret Wars were based on the 2015 Marvel Comics plot, viewers may encounter the Thor Corps, an army of Thor variants plucked out of the multiverse.

These other Gods of Thunder appear in the comics as enforcers of the twisted rule of Doctor Doom following the collision of universes. That might be a bombshell on screen. Think of dozens of Thors, warriors of fractured time, failed kingdoms, other fates, struggling to survive. One of them might sacrifice himself in a final battle with Doom. The moment would hit hard: the hammer falls, the lightning fades, and Thor dies defending the multiverse.
But more importantly, it would not be our Thor. That distinction matters. It enables Marvel to address the themes of mortality, legacy, and sacrifice without necessarily terminating Hemsworth’s character. It also fits perfectly within the multiversal chaos the franchise has already embraced.
How The Multiverse Could Give Thor A Tragic Ending And A Future

This would not be new ground for the MCU. ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ proved that variants can be used to blur the boundary between death and continuation.
The emotional finality of ‘Logan‘ was overcome by a different multiversal version of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Whereas other variants were sent without interfering with the path of the central character.

Marvel has demonstrated that it is not afraid to play by these rules. It would be poetic to apply the same reasoning to Thor. A defeated form could even motivate the main Thor to develop, maybe into a mentor, or a redefinition of what it means to be a god in a broken universe.
A multiversal sacrifice would give that gravitas without shutting the door completely. As we know, in the era of endless timelines, death does not necessarily mean goodbye.
