The Hulk has been sold as a tempered hero for decades. But now and then, Marvel is reminding us that he is a lot more than just disturbing.
The worst form of the Jade Giant in the comics is not the angriest or the largest one, but the one that is entirely disconnected from Bruce Banner’s humanity. And that is precisely where the MCU should go next.
Infernal Hulk Is Hulk At His Most Terrifying

The most sinister version of the character in Marvel Comics comes in the shape of Infernal Hulk, which was introduced in The Incredible Hulk. Infernal Hulk is not another split personality within Banner’s mind. He’s something else entirely.
Infernal Hulk is possessed by a malevolent force called Eldest and has the power of supernatural horror elements, breaking his connection with Banner completely.

No tragic duality here. No agonized scientist in the back seat. This Hulk does not rage because he’s hurt. He kills because he desires to. That difference makes him terrifying.
Where Immortal Hulk was more inclined to cosmic and body horror, Infernal Hulk is more folk horror, demonic imagery, twisted landscapes, and grotesque violence. The world around him rots. Even heroes are smaller in his presence. He is not a misconstrued monster. He’s the monster under the bed. It is the first time Hulk has really felt like a villain who can not be reasoned with.
Infernal Hulk Era Makes Smart Hulk Look Like A Cartoon

The Hulk has been toying with horror on screen. However, it never actually paid off. The most disturbing MCU image is probably the initial years of Hulk in The Incredible Hulk. The shadowy bottling plant sequence plays like a creature feature, with soldiers picked off by something massive and unseen.
In The Avengers, when Hulk is stalking Natasha Romanoff in the Helicarrier corridors, it felt like a slasher film scene, rough, wild, and uncontrollable.

Even ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ momentarily re-experienced that fear when Hulk went on his rampage. But then came the Smart Hulk. Entertaining? Sure. Terrifying? Not even close.
The most frightening Hulk is not the one who makes jokes. It is the one that makes you wonder whether Bruce Banner is even in there anymore. If the MCU truly wants to restore Hulk’s gravitas, it shouldn’t just make him angry again. It should make him unknowable.
