The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ was a critically acclaimed film despite Marvel being on a negative streak with its films. It explored the complexities of the multiverse and the consequences of tampering with its fabric.
Moreover, in the film, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch was the main antagonist. However, the original plans for the film were quite different, as revealed by insider MyTimeToShine.
A Behind-the-Scenes Look At ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’
Initially, ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’ was conceived with Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch, as a heroic figure. She intended to join forces with Doctor Strange to confront Nightmare, a powerful villain from Marvel Comics. “The movie initially started with Wanda as a hero and not a villain. The original antagonist was Nightmare and Wanda was supposed to help Doctor Strange reach and defeat him,” MyTimeToShine stated.

However, this vision for the film did not last long. Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, and Michael Waldron, the film’s writer, decided to take a different direction. Waldron, who had not yet watched the Disney+ series ‘WandaVision’, was eager to explore Wanda’s darker side and make her the antagonist of the film.
“Waldron who hadn’t watched WandaVision really wanted to make Wanda the antagonist,” the insider added.
Some Changes Were Made To Save Scarlet Witch’s Redemption Arc For Her Solo Film
This decision led to a complete overhaul of the plot. The role of Nightmare was diminished, and Chthon, another powerful villain from the Marvel Comics, was considered for a significant role. However, Feige ultimately decided to save Chthon for a future project. The future project according to the insider was a Scarlet Witch solo film.

The shift in Wanda’s character arc was a bold and risky move. However, it ultimately paid off. Elizabeth Olsen’s performance as the villainous Scarlet Witch was widely praised, and the film’s exploration of grief, loss, and the dangers of unchecked power resonated with audiences. Moreover, the solo Scarlet Witch film could explore her origins, her powers, and the consequences of her actions in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.
