Robert Downey Jr. has died a hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and now to outshine his own epic legacy, he is set to play a villain. After playing the iconic Iron Man, the actor is making a grand return to the MCU by stepping into the shoes of the infamous Doctor Doom.

Robert Downey Jr. All Set To Add Another Feather To His Marvel Cap
The San Diego Comic-Con left fans pleasantly surprised when Robert Downey Jr. made a triumphant entrance in Hall H to announce his comeback to Marvel. Although Downey had hinted at a potential Marvel return in his recent interviews, most assumed he would reprise his iconic role as Tony Stark. The Doctor Doom twist left the audience both shocked and thrilled.
The actor has a rich Marvel legacy that he built religiously with his role as Tony Stark. He first graced the Marvel Universe in 2008’s ‘Iron Man’, the very first film of the interconnected universe envisioned by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
Over the next decade, the actor became the face of the franchise and went on to feature in ten Marvel films, including ‘Iron Man 2′, ‘Iron Man 3′, ‘The Incredible Hulk’, ‘The Avengers’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’, ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, and ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
His character died a glorious death in ‘Endgame‘, leaving fans with much love and respect for their hero. The moment is considered a very pivotal one the history of Marvel, as its head Kevin Feige also emphasized during an interview in last December that Iron Man’s sacrifice was a moment they would never alter. “We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again,” Feige told Vanity Fair.

Robert Downey Jr. Had Opened Up About Working With Marvel Even After Iron Man’s Death
Even after his character’s death, Robert Downey Jr.’s love and dedication for Marvel never waned. In an interview with Esquire after his Oscar win for ‘Oppenheimer’, he opened up about his willingness to return to the Marvel fold. “Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA,” Downey said when asked about his return, adding, “Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. He’s the house. He will always win.”
Downey’s announcement as Victor von Doom caps off a remarkable year for the actor. He also won his first-ever Academy Award this year for Best Supporting Actor for the portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer‘.
Besides, his work in Park Chan-wook’s HBO mini-series ‘The Sympathizer’, where he played multiple roles, including CIA operative Claude, was also highly appreciated. The roles landed him an Emmy nomination for supporting actor in a limited series or anthology.
It now remains to be seen what magic he adds yet again to his new and exciting character from the MCU, with the iconic Russo Brothers heading the film.
