In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Downey opened up about taking on the complex role of Von Doom. He revealed that he and President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige were having a chat about how he “could be of service to what’s going on in the parks.”

Downey said, “Susan and I were sitting down with Feige at one point, and he said, ‘It just keeps occurring to me that if you were to come back’ and Susan was like, ‘Wait, wait, come back as what?'”

“Then we both realized over time that it was another thing that just disapproves any doubt anyone could ever have about [Fiege], a very sophisticated, creative thinker about how can we not go backward, how can we not disappoint expectations, how can we continue to beat expectations, and he brought up Victor Von Doom, and I looked into this character, and I was like ‘Wow,’ and later on he goes, ‘Let’s get Victor Von Doom right, let’s get that right‘” RDJ continued.

Downey also revealed he is also close with the Russo Brothers and expressed his excitement to work with directors again. “I’m close with the Russo Brothers; we have other business we’re doing. So, there’s this little group of fellow travelers and I had this instinct that I wanted to go to Bob Iger” Downey said.

Fans have been speculating and theorizing about which version of Doom will Robert Downey Jr. play. But the emphasis on “‘Let’s get Victor Von Doom right, let’s get that right,” confirms that he will be portraying Victor Von Doom itself and not a clone or a variant of Tony Stark.

This comes as much to many fans’ disappointment as they wanted to see a variant of Tony Stark taken over By Dr. Doom as seen in the well-acclaimed comic run ‘Demon In An Armor’.

According to rumors, Downey’s Doom will reportedly appear in next year’s ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps.’ He will be this universe’s Victor Von Doom, and seemingly will have a huge role in the post-credits scene, killing the entire “Council of Kangs,” paving the way for a soft reboot into ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘.

Either way, it’s clear that Downey has a great creative relationship with the Russo brothers and Feige from their previous Marvel collaborations. Fans can expect the actor and directors to team up once more for an impressive portrayal of Von Doom, one of the most menacing Marvel villains, in Doomsday and Secret Wars.
