Ryan Reynolds Downplays Deadpool’s Role In ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Ryan Reynolds is no stranger to fan speculation. Ever since his red-suited, wisecracking Deadpool officially crossed into the MCU with the record-breaking ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’, the internet has been buzzing with theories about when he’ll next pop up.

The chatter only intensified when Reynolds posted a photo of a spray-painted “A” over the Avengers logo on social media in August, sending Marvel fans into overdrive about a possible ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ appearance.

Now, in true Ryan Reynolds fashion, the actor has thrown a playful curveball at all that speculation. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly while promoting his latest project, a documentary about the late comedy legend John Candy, Reynolds insisted he hasn’t even stepped foot on the set of Marvel’s upcoming mega-event film. “Of course, I’ve written them all at home in my PJs, and nobody’s seen ’em, nor have I stepped foot on set. But, yeah, that’s about as far as I’ll go on that one,” Reynolds joked.

The actor’s comments come after months of speculation that Deadpool would return for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which is slated for release on December 18, 2026. The rumors seemed believable, after all, Reynolds’ Deadpool became a box office juggernaut with ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’.  Add in Channing Tatum’s surprise Gambit cameo in the same movie, and it looked like Marvel was slowly assembling a multiverse mash-up destined to collide in ‘Doomsday’.

However, Reynolds is refusing to spill. At the same time, Marvel actors are famously trained in the art of secrecy. So, instead of a flat denial, he teases just enough to keep the conversation alive. Fueling the fire were whispers of a supposed feud between Reynolds and Robert Downey Jr., who is set to make his MCU comeback in ‘Doomsday’ as Doctor Doom. Tabloids painted a picture of clashing egos on set. However, according to insiders, “zero bad blood” exists between the two stars, with one source even noting that they’ve never met in person.

Beyond the comic book speculation, Reynolds used his appearance at the Toronto Film Festival to open up about something more personal: his Canadian identity and how it shaped his approach to Hollywood. Speaking at the world premiere of ‘John Candy: I Like Me’, Reynolds reflected on his roots with honesty and humor. “I’m not MAGA. I’m not extreme anything,” he said during an informal talk, pushing back against the divisiveness of identity politics in today’s culture wars. “It’s too binary, us versus them.”

Instead, Reynolds credits his upbringing in Vancouver and his improv training for teaching him collaboration and adaptability, skills that have become essential in Hollywood’s often cutthroat environment. “It’s important to keep your head screwed on right,” he explained. “And Canada helped me with that. Canada was a third parent. That business is tough. It can destroy you. I have seen the illusion of it and sort of the thin ice.

His remarks carried the kind of candid vulnerability fans have come to expect from him. Reynolds has never shied away from poking fun at himself while also addressing the pressures of fame. This perspective no doubt influenced his work on the John Candy documentary, which he produced out of admiration for the late comedy giant. Reynolds revealed he even sprinkled Easter eggs about Candy throughout his Deadpool films.
