Sebastian Stan, who has portrayed Bucky Barnes (aka The Winter Soldier) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, recently shared an intriguing take on Marvel’s upcoming film ‘Thunderbolts*’.
Another popular comparison for the film has been DC’s ‘Suicide Squad‘. With its storyline around anti-heroes or straight-up villains saving the world, the tone of the two films is very similar. However, Stan has a different take.
Sebastian Stan Believes ‘Thunderbolts*’ Will Be Unlike Any Other Marvel Team
Speaking to Variety, Stan likened the movie to the iconic ‘80s teen drama The Breakfast Club. He described the film’s unconventional team dynamics and humor as reminiscent of the classic John Hughes masterpiece. “It’s really interesting,” Stan said.

“The closest one that comes to mind is the Breakfast Club. It’s an odd group of people thrown together. And the humor and tone come from the fact that they’re all misfits.” Stan went on to hint that his own character, Bucky, may take on a role similar to the supervising teacher in The Breakfast Club.
The comparison paints ‘Thunderbolts*’ as a unique addition to the MCU, one that promises to step outside the traditional hero-villain narrative. Like ‘The Breakfast Club’, which explored the unlikely bonds formed among a group of teens in detention, ‘Thunderbolts*’ appears to center on the complicated dynamics between a group of antiheroes.
Unlike the Avengers, who are portrayed as paragons of heroism, the Thunderbolts roster features morally ambiguous characters with complex backstories. Stan believes this tension will be a highlight of the film. “You have these people who don’t belong together trying to figure out how to be a team,” he explained.
Sebastian Stan Denies Involvement In ‘Captain America: Brave New World’
During the interview, Stan also addressed rumors about whether Bucky Barnes will appear in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’. When initially asked about his involvement, Stan momentarily said “yeah” before quickly backpedaling, clarifying, “No, sorry, you mean Thunderbolts?”

He went on to hint that he likely wouldn’t be part of the ‘Brave New World’ cast, joking about how quiet the production of ‘Thunderbolts*’ was in comparison. “Let me tell you, it was a much quieter year for me because I didn’t see Anthony Mackie,” Stan said, adding with a laugh, “Although I miss Anthony Mackie daily, and that’s something I don’t like to admit.”
Fans have long cherished the bond between Bucky and Sam Wilson, but it seems ‘Thunderbolts*’ will allow Bucky to explore new relationships. However, a lot of fans are sure that Stan will be involved in the film. Additionally, his remarks also suggest Marvel may be deliberately carving out distinct narrative paths for Sam and Bucky.
