Sebastian Stan has shared some behind-the-scenes insights into the highly anticipated ‘Thunderbolts*’. The actor highlighted the film’s emphasis on practical effects over CGI.
As Marvel’s darker and more grounded team of antiheroes prepares to hit the big screen, Stan, who plays Bucky Barnes (aka the Winter Soldier), revealed how the film stands apart by going back to basics with real-world stunts and effects.
Sebastian Stan Praises ‘Thunderbolts*’ Authenticity
While speaking to Deadline, Sebastian Stan emphasized the authenticity of the stunts and how this approach sets ‘Thunderbolts*‘ apart from other MCU projects. “We did actual real stunts,” he said. “When you’re watching a truck blow up, it’s a truck blown up. It’s not CGI. Marvel really wanted this to have its own [feel] there were many things in the movie that were actually done practically.”
Stan believes this dedication to practical effects creates a visceral experience for audiences. “That does go a long way because people are smart. I think audiences just… they know,” he explained. By prioritizing realism the film aims to connect with viewers in a way that CGI-heavy productions often cannot. Additionally, this focus on practical effects also aligns with the thematic tone of Thunderbolts.
Sebastian Stan On Robert Downey Jr. And Chris Evans’ Return In ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
While discussing ‘Thunderbolts*’ with ET, Sebastian Stan also weighed in on the much-anticipated return of Marvel legends Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans in the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Since their exit from the MCU in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘Doomsday’ will mark their comeback.

Stan praised Marvel Studios for its bold storytelling choices. “I think what I appreciate is that there’s always an open way of thinking,” he said. “Marvel Studios don’t shut themselves down or put themselves in any pocket. They just want to keep exploring, and that’s what I think leads to great, better movies.”
With the multiverse as a central plot device in the next phase of the MCU, the possibilities for storytelling are limitless. This flexibility allows Marvel to bring back beloved characters. However, they’re taking a different, more villainous route for the actors’s return.
