Marvel has not yet officially announced what comic plot is driving ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. However, the expanding list of cast members in the film might be saying more than any official synopsis.
The Punisher, Scorpion, and Tarantula are three of the names that can be quietly used to suggest that Peter Parker is about to be dragged into something far larger than simple street-level mayhem. Their inclusion initially appears to be typical Spider-Man world-building. For longtime comic readers, the combination feels deliberate.
‘Brand New Day’ Points To A Classic Spider-Man Comic Arc

These three characters were not working alone in the original Clone Saga arc of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’. The Jackal, Miles Warren’s twin brother, manipulated them and staged attacks on Spider-Man as a component of a greater, much more personal revenge. In the comics, the Punisher (first featured in The Amazing Spider-Man #129) was first contracted to kill Spider-Man on false claims.

Scorpion, who would later be played in the MCU by Michael Mando, was also weaponized with insider knowledge of Peter’s identity. Even Tarantula was enlisted in the hopeless efforts of the Jackal to wear the Webslinger out.
Now, with Jon Bernthal back as the Punisher and Scorpion officially back, not to mention the promotional material hinting at Tarantula, it is difficult not to see the trend. These characters were not just random threats in the comics, but chess pieces. And Spider-Man was the victim of something much more calculated.
Why Punisher, Scorpion And Tarantula’s Casting Matters

In other words, this does not mean that ‘Brand New Day’ will directly translate the Clone Saga. The original plot is notoriously thick, provocative, and full of identity twists that would be difficult to fit into one movie. However, the emotional essence of that arc, Peter against organized assaults related to his past, seems to be a thematic fit.

The MCU has framed this sequel as a mystery-based narrative, where Spider-Man is investigating crimes that could be related to previous events in his life. That mirrors the spirit of the Clone Saga, where Peter was forced to question who was pulling the strings while battling increasingly dangerous adversaries.
It does not necessarily imply the inclusion of clones. Yet, it might indicate something more earthly yet no less disturbing: a hidden mastermind exploiting Peter’s history. In that case, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ may not be another villain-of-the-week story. It might be the start of an arc that challenges not only Spider-Man’s strength, but also his identity. And honestly? That is when the character is at his finest.
