At the time of the release of ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, not many people thought that the movie would entirely transform the superhero animation. The movie not only presents viewers with a new iteration of Spider-Man in the form of Miles Morales, but it also opens the gateway to a new, stylistic universe where any Spider-hero could be.
Sony has since gone heavy on the animated aspect of the franchise. Although the studio has reduced most of its live-action villain projects, its animated Spider-Man universe is growing. Several films are now in development, promising a future where multiple Spider-heroes take the spotlight.
The Spider-Verse Story Isn’t Finished

The most expected one is ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’, the long-awaited sequel to the trilogy that started in 2018. The film, which was originally supposed to be released much earlier, will now release on June 18, 2027. The narrative continues the cliffhanger of ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’, where Miles was stuck in a harmful parallel universe.

The audience anticipates the movie to provide an emotional and action-packed ending, particularly following the last movie that opened up the multiverse with an infinite number of Spider-heroes. Although the trilogy might be the conclusion of the arc that Miles is currently on, it is not likely to be the end of his animated adventures.
New Spider-Heroes Are Ready to Lead Their Own Movies

In addition to the trilogy conclusion, Sony is also considering spinoff ideas with other Spider-Verse characters. A ‘Spider-Gwen’ movie about the alternate-universe hero Gwen Stacy is one of the most discussed concepts. The character emerged as one of the breakout stars of the franchise, and Sony has confirmed that the project is still in development.

There were even initial plans that the film might include other female heroes such as Jessica Drew and Silk. A ‘Spider-Punk’ film is another possible highlight, and it centers on the subversive incarnation of the web-slinger, Hobie Brown. The actor Daniel Kaluuya, who voiced the character in ‘Across the Spider-Verse’, is assisting with the project and is said to be working on the script.
Sony is also considering an animated movie about Venom, the legendary symbiote anti-hero. Although little information is available, the project is said to be by filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, and possibly Tom Hardy.
Collectively, these projects indicate that Sony believes that there is massive potential in animated Marvel storytelling. Provided that the studio can keep providing the same level of creativity and heart that characterized the Spider-Verse films, the future of animated Spider-Man stories may be as exciting as the web-slinger himself.
