The Real Meaning Behind ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Changes Everything

In Short
  • The title 'Born Again' refers to the rebranding of New York City under Wilson Fisk's control.
  • The series explores an ideological struggle between Matt Murdock and Fisk over the city's future.
  • Matt Murdock's personal journey reflects a rebirth as he reclaims his identity as Daredevil.

The title of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’  initially seemed out of place. The audience wanted a literal adaptation of the well-known Born Again plot, particularly since that storyline is so iconic in the history of Daredevil.

However, that relationship never really happened as the episodes progressed. Rather, the series appeared to be narrating a completely different story. So, many people were left wondering whether the title was merely a nostalgic reference.  Season 2 eventually resolves that confusion.

The solution is much more interesting than one might have guessed. The term ‘Born Again’ does not actually refer to Matt Murdock. It is about New York City itself. The city is being redefined, rebranded, and, according to Wilson Fisk, reborn under his rule. Fisk is giving the people of New York a cleaner, safer version of the city through propaganda campaigns, strict laws, and a crackdown on vigilantes.

Banners in the city boast of this new beginning, but behind that smooth exterior is something much more disturbing. It is not a rebirth of hope, but of control. What is gratifying about this revelation is that it gives the story more depth instead of merely describing a creative decision.

Everything is reframed in the title. The struggle between Matt Murdock and Fisk is no longer personal. It becomes ideological. Both men are fighting over entirely different versions of what the city should be, yet both of them believe they are saving the city.

Meanwhile, there is still a more intimate interpretation that is running parallel to it. Matt’s journey carries its own sense of rebirth. After stepping away from being Daredevil, his return to the mask feels like reclaiming a part of himself he tried to bury. In that regard, he is also born again, not by triumph, but by need.

It even has a hint of a meta layer. The show itself is a re-creation, a continuation that is neither a reboot nor a direct sequel, either. Similar to its characters, the series is discovering a new life with the burden of the past.

By revealing the meaning behind its title in this way, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ turns what once felt confusing into something purposeful. It is a declaration of power, perception, and the cost of what it takes to reconstruct something that was never really destroyed.
