Chadwick Boseman’s impact as T’Challa, the Black Panther, was profound. His portrayal in ‘Black Panther’ and subsequent MCU appearances gave fans a superhero who was regal, powerful, and deeply human. After Boseman’s tragic passing in 2020 following a private battle with colon cancer, Marvel Studios faced a difficult creative and ethical decision about what to do with the beloved character of T’Challa.
While fans speculated about recasting, Marvel ultimately chose not to move in that direction. That decision continues to resonate, and it’s now at the center of the upcoming animated Disney+ series ‘Marvel Zombies’.
Marvel Wants To Honor Chadwick Boseman’s Legacy Without Recasting

‘Marvel Zombies’ premieres on September 24 with a whole new take on the Avengers we love. Instead of recasting Boseman for the show, the creators crafted a tribute that respects both the actor and his legacy. In a recent interview with SR, showrunner Bryan Andrews and Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum shared the reasoning behind the choice. Their words revealed not only creative considerations but also the emotional weight of honoring an actor who left behind a remarkable legacy.

The biggest takeaway from the interview is clear: Boseman’s T’Challa is irreplaceable. Bryan Andrews admitted that if Boseman were alive, ‘Marvel Zombies’ would have unfolded very differently. In fact, Boseman was meant to headline his own ‘What If…?’ spinoff centered on the alternate version of T’Challa as Star-Lord, introduced in the first season of the anthology. Sadly, those plans were halted after his passing.
So, when it came time to include T’Challa in ‘Marvel Zombies’, the creative team knew that recasting would not only be jarring but also risk being perceived as disrespectful to Boseman’s memory. Instead, they designed a moment where Peter Parker narrates a scene featuring T’Challa. Without words, the character still appears, but in a way that feels like a remembrance.
Andrews explained that it was about finding “another way to be with him in some strange way.” In other words, the show doesn’t attempt to overwrite Boseman’s presence. Brad Winderbaum revealed that the team showed an early animatic to Black Panther director Ryan Coogler. Coogler, who worked so closely with Boseman, provided invaluable input that strengthened T’Challa’s sequence in ‘Marvel Zombies’.
Black Panther Is Still Defined By Chadwick Boseman’s Portrayal

The choice not to recast Boseman is also consistent with Marvel’s handling of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. In the 2022 film, T’Challa’s death became part of the MCU canon, allowing the franchise to address grief and legacy both on and off the screen. Shuri stepped into the mantle of Black Panther, while the film itself became a moving tribute to Boseman. However, that decision was not without controversy.

Some fans argued that T’Challa, as a character, should live on in the MCU through another actor, pointing to how other heroes have been recast over the years. However, Marvel took a different path, recognizing that Boseman’s Black Panther was still too fresh, too intertwined with his real-life story, to replace so soon. The animated medium of ‘Marvel Zombies’ presented another opportunity to revisit the character.
However, producers knew the same principle applied. Even in a spinoff series not bound by strict continuity, Boseman’s T’Challa remains sacred ground. His presence in the show acts as a symbolic acknowledgment of his lasting influence. The idea is not to freeze the character of T’Challa forever, but to recognize timing.
