The lack of Frank Castle in Season 2 of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ has left fans disappointed. However, behind-the-scenes remarks by its stars indicate that the door is not necessarily closed; it is just out of reach.
Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox both have recently explained why Jon Bernthal will not be putting on the Punisher suit this time, and their explanations feel less like rejection and more like scheduling chaos in an expanding Marvel universe.
No Punisher in ‘Born Again’ Season 2, But His Future Looks Bigger Than Ever

D’Onofrio says that Bernthal is not absent because of creative differences or lack of interest; on the contrary. The actor is busy working on his own standalone Punisher project, which is an hour-long film about the violent anti-hero. “If John wasn’t busy making his own hour-long Punisher film and hanging with that insect, we would have wanted him to join us in Season 2 for sure,” D’Onofrio shared.

It’s a feeling of revelation. Marvel seems to be letting the character breathe again instead of trying to fit Frank Castle into another plot. For fans, that is a two-sided sword: you miss him in the group, but the prospect of a character-driven, focused Punisher narrative is difficult to overlook.
D’Onofrio even joked that Bernthal was busy, implying that, given the right timing, the creative team would have embraced him back without a second thought. There is no bad blood, just conflicting priorities in a tight production schedule.
Charlie Cox On Why The Punisher Is Absent

Cox gave the situation a lighter spin, implying that Bernthal was gallivanting with Spider-Man. “He was gallivanting with Spider-Man the entire time.” It’s a jab at the fact that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become so interconnected.
The comment, be it literal or tongue-in-cheek, supports the notion that actors are always in flux between projects.

The reference to Spider-Man also creates speculation. Is The Punisher making an appearance in a different part of the MCU? Or was it merely a joke to recognize how much in-demand Bernthal has become in the Marvel storytelling machine?
In any case, the moral of the story is straightforward: The Punisher is not dead; he is just in a different place. And, frankly, that could make his eventual return even more effective.
