The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to receive a major boost with the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. However, one of his former Avengers co-stars was caught completely off guard by the announcement. Jeremy Renner, who portrayed Hawkeye in multiple MCU films, expressed his surprise at Downey’s comeback in an interview.
“I had no idea” Renner admitted. “This son of a b*tch didn’t say anything to me, and we’re good friends“. After seeing Downey’s reveal online at the SDCC ’24, Renner said he “started blowing up [Downey’s] phone” in their Avengers group chat. The actor was flabbergasted that Downey had kept this away from him and the other actors he considers family from their time together making superhero films together.

In an interview with US Weekly, Renner said he immediately blew up his co-star’s phone to get answers. “What’s going on? Are you hiding this from us?’ I don’t know“. Renner admitted that he asked Downey in their chats and calls. “That’s exciting news, man. I’m really, really excited about it,” said Renner, expressing his thrill and enthusiasm about his co-star’s return.
Renner revealed more about his reaction to discovering Downey’s return. “I’m excited about it. We’ll see. I think we’ll probably be doing it,” Renner said, jokingly. “We’ll have to figure it all out. It’s all brand new. It all just happened. They just made the announcement, so I guess we got to start figuring it all out“. This reaction by Renner and several others notes that Feige and Downey, both had kept this very much a secret to sweep by fans and co-stars alike.

Will Jeremy Renner Return As Hawkeye?
When asked if this now opens the door for his own character, Hawkeye, to potentially rejoin the MCU films, Renner danced around a direct answer. However, he seemed receptive to the idea. “It seems the Avenger movies have always been really fan favorites and there’s so many wonderful characters in them,” Renner said. “I think they’re going to probably have to piece it together like week-by-week, just for people’s schedules“. He acknowledged the large cast that comprises the Avengers, suggesting he would be willing to return if the timing was right.
Renner’s reaction shows just how close the original Avenger actors remain, even after their shared blockbuster journey has concluded. With Downey making his unexpected return and directors the Russo brothers also coming back, fans can hope this sets the stage for the band to get back together once more. Only time will tell what surprises Marvel has in store, but it seems the possibility of this iconic team uniting on screen one last time is closer than anyone thought.
