The Marvel Cinematic Universe is possibly about to launch a new iteration of Gambit, and one surprising name has allegedly been brought up: Timothée Chalamet.
Although it has not been officially confirmed, there has been recent industry buzz that Marvel is looking at him to play the iconic X-Men mutant. Should it happen, the casting would indicate a definite change of direction after Channing Tatum’s cameo in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’.
Marvel Might Be Planning A Younger Gambit

Tatum’s appearance was widely celebrated by fans, many of whom had spent years hoping to see his long-rumored Gambit project finally materialize. The short appearance felt like closure. However, as Marvel is peeking into the future of the MCU, a younger actor might be a very sensible choice. And Timothée Chalamet could be exactly what it needs.
Gambit has been one of the most fascinating members of the X-Men list. Remy LeBeau is a charismatic character with a complicated history, Cajun charm, and kinetic card-throwing abilities. Tatum struggled to adapt the character into a standalone film in the 20th Century Fox era of Marvel movies. That project did not materialize, and eventually was scrapped as Walt Disney bought Fox and restructured the Marvel film plans.

So, his ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ appearance was thus a nostalgic and celebratory one, a fun reference to what might have been. Still, Marvel Studios is currently working towards a long-term integration of the X-Men into the MCU. For that type of multi-film future, the studio might be interested in an actor who can develop with the role over the next ten years. That is where Chalamet comes in.
Timothée Chalamet Would Be An Unexpected But Interesting Gambit

At first glance, Chalamet might not seem like the obvious choice for Gambit. However, the actor has demonstrated over and over again that he is able to bear huge franchises and still manage to infuse his acting with emotional undertones. Chalamet has demonstrated a remarkable versatility, both in his quietness and confidence on screen, from ‘Dune’ to ‘Wonka’.

Gambit, with all his flashy abilities and his smooth-talking, is also full of emotional depth. The character can be much more than just the guy throwing explosive cards. Casting Chalamet would also be in line with Marvel’s trend to bring in younger stars who can carry future storylines.
Naturally, all this is just rumors at the moment. However, the thought of Chalamet in the trench coat, as Gambit has, is enough to get fans talking. And if Marvel really wants Gambit to be a significant part of the next phase of the MCU, a new face could be precisely the risk they are ready to take.
