Tom Holland Claims Robert Downey Jr. Saved His Marvel Debut
When Tom Holland joined the MCU in 2016, he was initially given a substantial amount of dialogue for his scenes. Tom while talking on the Rich Roll podcast recalled that as the production progressed his lines were drastically cut. This left him feeling disappointed and uncertain about his future in the MCU.
However, Robert Downey Jr. always came to his rescue. When Holland and Downey Jr. arrived on set to shoot their scene, RDJ noticed that Holland’s lines had been significantly reduced. “Downey piped up and was like, ‘Where’d all the kid’s lines go?‘” Holland recalled.
The veteran actor argued that the scene would be better with more of Holland’s dialogue, and the directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, eventually agreed. Downey Jr.’s intervention was a turning point for Holland’s career. The additional dialogue allowed him to showcase his talent and make an impression on the audience.
“Downey was like, ‘No, no, no. You’re gonna want to spend some time on this,'” Holland explained. “Like, ‘Let’s shoot the whole thing from the audition. You can always cut it, but you’d wanna have it.’ And they used all of it. So, I owe that to him,” he added.
Holland’s appearance as Spider-Man in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ was a huge success. He has since become one of the most popular and beloved characters in the MCU and RDJ’s mentorship helped him achieve all this.

Holland further acknowledged the challenges involved in continuing the franchise. “One of the things is that, with Marvel, your film is a small cog in a large machine,” he stated. “You have to make sure you can fit into that timeline at the right time to benefit the bigger picture. That’s one of the challenges we’re facing,” he added.
While he is satisfied with the current draft of the script, he admitted to feeling apprehensive about taking on another Spider-Man film. Holland is aware of the risks involved and wants to make sure that any future Spider-Man film is worthy of the character’s legacy.
Despite his uncertainty, Holland has not ruled out the possibility of returning as Spider-Man. He believes that if the story is worth telling he would be up for it. Additionally, he also expressed a desire to pass the baton to the next generation of actors. He wants to mentor them just like RDJ mentored him.
