This article contains spoilers for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
Deadpool is famously known for his fourth wall breaks and references to other Marvel properties in his films. However, in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘, fans see him take those meta jokes to another level (or another timeline) by actually attempting to join Earth 616’s Avengers. Despite his best efforts at the interview, Happy rejected Deadpool from becoming an Avenger. But why did the Avengers say no to the Merc with a Mouth?
The movie opens with Deadpool using Cable’s time travel device to shift to the MCU timeline in 2018. There, he lands an interview with Happy Hogan to fulfil his dream of becoming an Avenger. While ecstatic at first, his chaotic energy may have been off-putting to the more serious Happy Hogan.

Deadpool’s Motivations Are Self-Serving
Paradox explains to Deadpool during their conversation that for him becoming an Avenger is less about helping others and more about helping himself feel better. As guardians of Earth, the Avengers look for heroes who are solely focused on serving the greater good.
Even in the conversation with Happy, he questioned Deadpool to know his real motive for wanting to join the Avengers. It was revealed that he only wanted to do so to make himself feel better and worthy in front of Vanessa and himself.
Happy ensured that being an Avenger is not to treat one’s low self-esteem but instead for a selfless act of helping people in need. He hadn’t yet learned the importance of his powers, which had been a major plot point in the first two movies.

Deadpool’s Personality Clashes With The Avengers’ Image
Despite Happy’s and Wade’s interview being light-hearted, Deadpool’s crass nature didn’t align with that of the Avengers. The Avengers have a clean-cut reputation and are Earth’s mightiest heroes that people look up to.
Even though Tony Stark had a rocky past, the Avengers had modelled an image of responsible citizens through their acts. The addition of the blabbering mercenary would have certainly tarnished that image. Though his personality is entertaining, it would simply have clashed with the team dynamics.
In the end, his motivations and persona were not the right fit yet for Earth’s mightiest heroes. It took teaming up with Wolverine to learn the values of what a hero is. Who’s to say that he won’t be an important part of the upcoming Avengers movies in the future? Fans will just have to buckle down and wait it out.
