The Real Reason Why Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ Is Ending After Season 3

Marvel Studios’ groundbreaking animated series, ‘What If…?’ is set to conclude its run with its upcoming third season. The decision to end the series, despite its immense popularity and potential for endless storytelling, is rooted in the broader narrative of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Moreover, the head of Marvel Television and Animation, Brad Winderbaum shed some light on Marvel’s decision not to go past season 3 for the show.

Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum explained to THR that the ‘What If…?‘ has always been intrinsically tied to the larger MCU and the Multiverse Saga. “For reasons that will become clear in the next couple of years,” Winderbaum hinted. “This was the right time to culminate the series from a story perspective.

While the show has explored a wide range of alternate realities, Winderbaum believes that not every Marvel project needs to be a massive, universe-altering event. “The most important thing we can do as a studio is tell stories that resonate with people,” he said. “I don’t know that every show has to try to be a giant Endgame-scale event.

Moreover, the highly anticipated final season of ‘What If…?’ is set to premiere on Disney+ on December 22, 2024. The series will conclude on December 29, 2024. The show will simultaneously release an episode every day from December 22 to 29.

Another curious title is “What If… Agatha Went to Hollywood?” This could involve a magical twist on classic Hollywood cinema or a more sinister take on celebrity culture. The season also includes a surprising twist on the Eternals story with “What If… The Emergence Destroyed the Earth?”

This episode could explore a darker timeline where Arishem’s destructive plan comes to fruition. Moreover, other intriguing titles include “What If… The Red Guardian Stopped The Winter Soldier?” and “What If… Howard the Duck Got Hitched?” Additionally, with a blend of humor, action, and cosmic horror, ‘What If…?’ Season 3 is poised to be a fitting finale for this groundbreaking series.
