When Marvel Animation first announced ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,’ it was billed as a prequel set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, promising to explore Peter Parker’s early days as a superhero.
Moreover, it was initially proposed as a story leading up to major events like ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’. This exciting prospect, however, quickly fizzled out.
Brad Winderbaum Wanted More Creative Freedom With ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’
‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ ultimately decided to forge its own path, existing outside the confines of the MCU. Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum explained that keeping the show within the established MCU framework proved to be a significant creative hurdle.
“It started out as ‘Okay it’s Spider-Man’s freshman year, he’s going to be a freshman. Can we get away with this being entirely in the MCU? And very early on in the development process, we realized how locked in that actually made us,” he revealed. The constraints of the MCU canon would have severely limited the creative freedom of the showrunners.
“We couldn’t really use his rogues gallery, we couldn’t really use his origin. It was not fun, honestly. We would’ve had to put so many limiters on our story to get it to lock into canon,” Winderbaum elaborated. He described how adhering to the MCU would have put the team in a “hard place,” constantly navigating the complexities of established continuity.
While the show may not be directly connected to the MCU, Winderbaum assures fans that it retains a strong connection to the core of Spider-Man. “It does have a lot of DNA that is very similar to the MCU depiction of the Tom Holland Spider-Man, but it really also draws all the way back to Steve Ditko,” he said.
