WWE veteran Randy Orton is a long time performer in the wrestling industry but he has also dabbled in acting over the years with roles in movies. In a recent podcast, Orton opened up about one high profile Hollywood audition that ultimately didn’t work out. Orton shared that he auditioned for the role of Cable in the 2018 blockbuster film ‘Deadpool 2‘.
While speaking with fellow WWE star Cody Rhodes on his podcast ‘What Do You Wanna Talk About?‘, Orton went into details about auditioning himself for the part of the time traveling mutant Cable. Here’s what he said.
Randy Orton Says He Prepared Well For The Role
Randy Orton said that when he first started getting representation in Hollywood, one of his early auditions was for the role of Cable in the ‘Deadpool‘ sequel. Orton thought he had a real shot, as he said “in my head, I was gonna be Cable”.
Orton explained that he took the audition seriously and prepared as best he could for the role. “I remember I got the sides, I worked on the accent and really tried to embody the character” he said.
As an intimidating and physically imposing character in the comics, Orton believes his 6’5 height and athletic background could have translated well to the big screen version of Cable. Despite putting in the work, Orton said he ultimately didn’t even get a callback for the role.
“Nope, no callback. No nothing. Yeah, thanks. Josh Brolin gets it. Of course Josh Brolin gets it and kills it,” he said. While disappointed it didn’t work out, Orton praised Brolin’s performance in the film.
Brolin brought a strong presence as Cable and was a key part of the success of ‘Deadpool 2‘. Even though he wasn’t able to play the character, Orton still looks back on the audition experience fondly as one of his earliest attempts to break out from just being known as a wrestler.

Randy Orton Holds Future Hollywood Ambitions
Despite not obtaining the Cable role, he still remains open to pursuing more acting jobs down the line. “I think I realized then, Oh, okay, I can send in these auditions but I’m a pro wrestler” Orton said.
“I really enjoy being a pro wrestler and everything it’s given me. I don’t think I’ll ever leave this place but you never know, the right role could come along someday,” he added.
Orton currently competes full time in WWE and his focus lies with having legendary matches and moments in sports entertainment. However, he hasn’t ruled out adding to his repertoire of big screen roles if presented with the right opportunity.
