Gimli is the epitome of endurance and bravery. He possesses unyielding strength in battle and an absolute sense of duty. His fierce loyalty towards his friends and the people of Middle-earth makes him fight alongside the Fellowship against unimaginable odds. He has legendary skills wielding an axe and boastfully an unbreakable spirit that comes through his many clashes with the orcs.

Although he is first imbued with a traditional distrust of elves, the friendship Gimli comes to share with Legolas proves to be one of the most intense friendships in Middle-earth. It speaks to the depth and ability of Gimli to look beyond age-old conflicts.

8. Éowyn

Éowyn, the shieldmaiden of Rohan, is one of the most incredible examples of how someone can break free from what society expects them to be to become one of the boldest warriors in Middle-earth. In a world where women hardly show their faces in battle, she disguises herself as a man to join the battle against Sauron. She gains honor while warring at the Battle of Pelennor Fields when she kills the Witch-king of Angmar after King Théoden is killed. Her boastful declaration, “I am no man!” and her blow to the Witch-king demonstrate her inner strength and a good example of resistance.

Éowyn’s strength and endurance resonate throughout the saga, placing her as one of the strongest characters even though she doesn’t possess supernatural power.

7. Galadriel

Galadriel is the Lady of Lothlórien with extreme wisdom and power. She is one of the most influential elves in Middle-earth. The Elven Ring, Nenya, in her possession gives her power, allowing her to guard her realm against the influence of Sauron. The prescience and telepathy of Galadriel make her very effective in knowing both friends and enemies, and she acts as a guide as well as a protector to the Fellowship. She resists temptation from the One Ring – showing her enormous strength of will.

Her Essence alone commands respect, while ancient wisdom puts her in an unreachable position.

Gandalf, a Maia disguised as a wizard, is sent by the Valar to help Middle-earth gain victory over Sauron. Gandalf the Grey plays an important position as a leader and mentor who advises the Fellowship with depth and guile. After becoming Gandalf the White, he emerges above Saruman as the leader of the Istari boasting more authority to fight against the forces of Sauron. Elrond, the Lord of Rivendell, warrior, healer, and a wise leader with unmatched experience or knowledge of the history of Middle-earth. His long life also made him one of the most skilled strategists, capable of knowing what effects different decisions will have. In his role as the wielder of the Elven Ring Vilya, he kept his realm safe from problems that arose, and with his part in unifying the Fellowship, his influence and character strength are noted.

He balances his task of responsibility with amiability, which makes him both the confidant of Aragorn and a crucial element in the fight against Sauron.

4. Sauron

As a former Maia corrupted by Morgoth, Sauron is the most feared creature in Middle-earth. Sauron’s power lies in the manipulation and control that he exerts, which is greatest under the One Ring. Through the Ring, he wields his power over others, scattering corruption and exerting control over the wielders of the other Rings of Power. Even without a body, Sauron’s influence could be felt across all of Middle-earth which controls the storyline that unfolds throughout the saga.

With a calculating mind and prowess in black magic, he is nearly unstoppable, held only by the courageous Free Peoples of Middle-earth.

3. Saruman

First, as head of the Istari, Saruman becomes enamored by his ambition and desire for power. With extreme knowledge of good and evil magic, he is one of the most dangerous characters. Saruman uses his persuasive influences with the people around him, for example, how he traps King Théoden and how he goes on to create the Uruk-hai army. His move to dark reflects the duality of his character who wants power more than to save Middle-earth.

His treachery goes against him, but his ingenuity and magical skills prove him to be one of the most powerful characters.

2. The Witch-King Of Angmar

The Witch-king of Angmar is the mighty servant of Sauron and the leader of Nazgûl, quite a fearful figure on the battleground. Invigorated by the dark magic and empowered by Sauron’s will, he had an overwhelming power that terrorized everyone who crossed his path. His prophecy that “no man can kill him” made him more than invincible in people’s eyes until his encounter with Éowyn.

The Witch-king who was linked to Sauron and a persecutor of the Ring without abatement makes him the most important instrument of darkness, and the fear he inspires in others places him among the most powerful creatures of Middle-earth.

1. Aragorn

Aragon, The rightful prince of Gondor and leader of the Free Peoples is a strong warrior and a wise leader. From being a simple Ranger to becoming a king, the journey where he experienced self-development and learned to be proud of his lineage and fulfill his destiny. His combat skills, hard-won over many years of hardship, make him a powerhouse force on the battlefield, and his leadership inspires loyalty in men, elves, and dwarves alike.

Aragorn is the perfect example of selfless service and responsibility since his sole aim is protecting Middle-earth from Sauron’s influence. His strength is what builds his character to make him stand tall above many in Tolkien’s world.
