The ‘Lord of the Rings‘ franchise is a timeless example of book adaptations done right by Hollywood. The epic saga based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s works has won multiple Academy Awards and turned many of its cast members into global stars over the years.
But did you know that the characters that we’ve grown to love weren’t originally supposed to be played by the existing cast? Several A-listers were approached for many of the primary characters, but they all responded with a “no”.
1. Sean Connery

Gandalf could have looked very different on screen. Sean Connery was originally offered the iconic role in ‘The Lord of the Rings‘ trilogy. However, the legendary ‘James Bond‘ star declined the offer because he “never understood it.” Of course, Middle-earth’s lore isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
The role eventually went to Ian McKellen. In the trilogy, Gandalf serves as a powerful wizard and one of the main guiding forces behind the events that push Frodo Baggins into his world-changing quest.

2. Nicolas Cage

The fiery-skulled anti-hero of the ‘Ghost Rider’ series was initially approached for a major part in the film series. Well, Nicolas Cage was already a big name in Hollywood when he was offered the role of Aragorn.
However, wanting to prioritize his family over his projects, he ended up saying no. The shocking part is that the award-winning actor also turned down ‘The Matrix’ trilogy!
3. Russell Crowe

Now, this one might not come as a surprise. While known for many powerful performances, Russell Crowe is often remembered for delivering intense, battle-charged dialogue in historical armor.
So it made sense that he was considered a potential candidate for Aragorn in ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ However, Crowe reportedly felt that director Peter Jackson wasn’t particularly eager to cast him, which led him to reject the franchise first.
4. Kate Winslet

The role of Éowyn in the franchise was offered to Kate Winslet. At the time, the renowned actress was rising to fame with the success of ‘Titanic‘. Owing to other commitments, Winslet declined the offer.
Eventually, Miranda Otto bagged the role and appeared in ‘The Two Towers’ and ‘The Return of the King’. That being said, the actress will be joining the upcoming extension, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’.
5. Uma Thurman

The effortlessly cool Hollywood star Uma Thurman, best known for her roles in ‘Kill Bill‘ and ‘Pulp Fiction,’ was also considered for the role of Éowyn.
However, Thurman ultimately turned down the opportunity because she wanted to take a break from acting at the time. She had just embraced motherhood and wanted to focus on her family.
6. Ethan Hawke

Ethan Hawke was offered the role of Faramir. Known for his strong performances in dramatic roles, Hawke seemed like a fitting choice for the thoughtful and conflicted character.
Although he initially considered the opportunity, Hawke ultimately chose not to take the part after his wife at the time, Uma Thurman, stepped away from the franchise. The role eventually went to David Wenham, who brought the Gondorian captain to life on screen.

7. Liam Neeson

The role of Faramir’s older brother, Boromir, was reportedly offered to Liam Neeson early in development. Known for powerful roles like Oskar Schindler in ‘Schindler’s List‘ and Ra’s al Ghul in ‘Batman Begins,’ Neeson was seen as a strong fit for the proud warrior of Gondor.
At the time, Neeson had just completed work on ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.‘ Since his character in that film also met a tragic end, he reportedly didn’t want to take on another role that ended the same way. So, he passed on Boromir.
8. Daniel Day-Lewis

Before Viggo Mortensen delivered his heroic performance as Aragorn, Daniel Day-Lewis was reportedly approached several times. Director Peter Jackson was particularly eager to bring him on board, believing the actor could bring his signature intensity and charisma to the fantasy series.
However, Day-Lewis declined the offer, reportedly because he wasn’t interested in committing to a massive studio production like ‘The Lord of the Rings film.’ In the end, Mortensen’s quiet strength and gallantry worked out best for Aragorn’s portrayal on screen.
9. Patrick Stewart

It seems Professor X and Magneto might have ended up on opposite sides outside the X-Men film series as well. During the casting process for ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ Patrick Stewart was reportedly considered for the role of Gandalf alongside Ian McKellen.
However, the casting never moved forward, as Stewart reportedly realized the character wasn’t for him after reading the script. In the end, McKellen stepped into the role and turned Gandalf into one of the most beloved characters in movie history.
10. Christopher Plummer

Adding another heavyweight to the list, Christopher Plummer was also considered for the role of Gandalf. In a 2015 interview, the veteran actor revealed that scheduling conflicts ultimately forced him to turn down the opportunity.
Plummer also shared that he had great admiration for the franchise and the world created by Tolkien, even though he wasn’t able to take part in it.
