With ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2‘ premiere on the horizon, the long-awaited return of Miranda Priestly and her fashion world is generating plenty of excitement. Yet one key character from the original film will not appear in the upcoming sequel, and we finally know why.
‘Entourage‘ star Adrian Grenier played Nate Cooper in ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’ But with the character facing heavy criticism from fans even two decades after the film’s release, it appears Nate won’t be making any appearance in the sequel.
Why Nate Became The Most Hated ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Character

When the production of The Devil Wears Prada 2 was announced, it was revealed that several characters from the original film would not be returning. ‘Outlander‘ actress Caitríona Balfe also expressed her disappointment. Adrian Grenier’s Nate was similarly rumored to be left out, largely due to audience reactions to the character after the first film’s release. In the original movie, Nate is a chef and Anne Hathaway’s Andy’s boyfriend.

Throughout the film, Grenier’s character repeatedly expresses his disapproval of Andy’s new job at Runway, the magazine run by Miranda. As soon as the movie premiered, his dismissive attitude toward Andy’s career shift sparked major backlash from audiences.
Many viewers even labeled Nate the true antagonist of the story instead of Miranda. Often described as insecure and jealous, the character became the subject of heavy criticism, with several blogs later ranking Nate among the worst boyfriends in movie history.
Adrian Grenier Addresses The Sequel Snub

With ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2‘ featuring a significant time jump, the idea that Nate and Andy’s relationship didn’t last comes as little surprise. In an interview with Page Six, Adrian Grenier suggested that the backlash against his character may have played a role in why he wasn’t asked to return for the sequel.

The actor admitted he would have loved to reprise the role. However, he also acknowledged that the character “aged like milk” in the eyes of many viewers, making the decision easier to understand.
Despite missing out on the sequel of one of the most influential fashion movies of all time, Grenier said he’s still excited to see the film. He even joked that maybe Nate could get his own spin-off someday.
Meanwhile, ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2‘ will reportedly follow a major crisis for Miranda Priestly as she faces industry rivalry, the decline of print media, and the possibility of retirement. The film is set to hit the theatres on May 1, 2026.
