Alyson Hannigan has been capturing hearts as the quirky Willow on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘ and as the endearing Lily on ‘How I Met Your Mother‘. But there’s one role that makes the 50-year-old actress cringe at the thought of her kids watching: Michelle Flaherty from ‘American Pie.’
If you think Hannigan is eager to relive her ‘American Pie‘ days with her daughters, think again. Despite the film’s iconic status and even Taylor Swift giving it a shoutout in her song “So High School,” Hannigan isn’t about to grab the popcorn and press play on a Saturday night family movie session.
Alyson Hannigan’s Daughters Are Curious About ‘American Pie’
In a recent chat with Us Weekly, Hannigan opened up about her daughters’ curiosity regarding her on-screen work. “When they were in elementary school, there was a phase where they both wanted to see stuff that we’d been in, like Buffy or whatever, and they were still too young,” Hannigan explained.
She’s referring to her daughters, who are now 12-years-old and 15-years-old, with husband and former ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘ co-star Alexis Denisof.
“They haven’t mentioned that they wanna see it, but they know how exciting it is,” Hannigan shared. “Taylor might’ve piqued their interest, but not that they’ve mentioned,” she added with a sigh of relief. The actress, who is a well-known Swiftie, isn’t exactly jumping for joy at the thought of her kids watching the raunchy comedy. “That’s the one I dread the most. … Hopefully, I can just ride it out until they’re in college.”

Taylor Swift’s Nod To ‘American Pie’ Sparks Alyson Hannigan’s Nostalgia
Taylor’s reference to ‘American Pie‘ in “So High School” has certainly brought the film back into the cultural spotlight. The song, which many believe is about her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce. It includes the line, “I’m watching ‘American Pie’ with you on a Saturday night.”
Hannigan, who was thrilled to hear the nod to her movie, joked, “I got to be with Taylor and Travis [Kelce] on the dates, really. Just the three of us — I mean, in my mind that’s how it went.”
In an earlier interview with Vulture, she shared her reaction to hearing the lyric for the first time. “I started listening to [the album], and when I got to ‘So High School,’ I was like, What?! I thought maybe I was still sort of sleeping and imagining it,” she recalled.
“But when I heard it, I was freaking out. I woke up my entire family who seemed less enthusiastic than I’d like them to be. Then, I called a friend, and she and I had a nice freakout together. I was so happy. Basically, I was on the date with Travis and Taylor.”
Hannigan’s ‘Dancing With the Stars‘ partner, Sasha Farber, even shared a video on Instagram of the two jamming out to the lyric in April. “EPICCCCC MOMENT!!! Alyson showing me Taylor’s new song, talks about American Pie !!!!!” he captioned the post.
