“I Share Her Vulnerability”: Angelina Jolie Seemingly Shades Brad Pitt While Talking About Her Tragic Maria Callas Role

Angelina Jolie was honored with a ten-minute ovation for her performance in the soprano’s biopic, ‘Maria’ at the Venice Film Festival. In the following press conference, Angelina answered how she related to her character. The film is a biographical psychological drama based on the renowned opera singer, Maria Callas. Pablo Larrain, the director, and Steven Knight, the writer were also present at the festival.

Maria is recorded as one of the greatest sopranos, blessed with incredible talent and cursed with tragedy. In the press conference, Angelina stated that she related to her character in the most unusual way, “I share her vulnerability.” Angelina became misty when the movie was received with a standing ovation at the film festival.

Angelina Jolie related her connection to Maria’s life while filming. Possibly referring to her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, she jokingly started, “Well, there’s a lot I won’t say in this room, that you probably know or assume.” She explained, “I think the way I related to her may be a surprise — [it was] probably the part of her that’s extremely soft and doesn’t have room in the world to be as soft as she truly was, and as emotionally open as she truly was.”

She added, “I share her vulnerability more than anything.” The plot revolves around Maria’s final days in Paris in the 1970s. During her last phase, Maria was involved in several scandals, and a love affair with Aristotle Onassis while she was still married. This is Pablo Larrain’s third female biopic after, ‘Spencer’ (2021) and ‘Jackie’ (2016).

‘Maria’ Sparks Oscar Buzz After Premiere In Venice

After her Venice Film Festival premiere, ‘Maria’ has sparked Oscar buzz. The film was received by a ten-minute standing ovation. To the Oscar’s whispers, Angelina replied, “My fear would be to disappoint them…So of course all other things, in my own business, if there’s a response to the work, I’m very grateful.” The actress believes that she has done her character justice and hopes, “if anything …[Maria] brings more people to opera.”

She added, “To explore it, to let it affect them and move them, ’cause it’s such a powerful art form and so important.” The film’s distribution rights have been acquired by Netflix. However, a release date has not been announced yet.
