Anya Taylor-Joy’s Alia Atreides May Be ‘Dune: Part Three’s Most Unpredictable Force

In Short
  • Anya Taylor-Joy describes Alia Atreides as a character burdened by the voices of her ancestors, leading to mental overload.
  • Alia's deep emotional connection to her brother Paul Atreides serves as both her anchor and a potential source of danger.
  • The film may explore how Alia's intense devotion to Paul could lead to unpredictable and threatening actions.

In a story filled with prophecy, power, and political warfare, one character may quietly emerge as the most unpredictable of them all. With the hype surrounding ‘Dune: Part Three’, Anya Taylor-Joy has provided a peek into the character of Alia Atreides.

And the glimpse is both intriguing and disturbing. Alia is not just another participant in the game of empires. She is much more than that, and maybe also much more dangerous.

In contrast to the majority of the characters in the world of Dune Messiah, Alia Atreides is in a continuous state of mental overload. According to Taylor-Joy, Alia has generations and generations in her mind. This refers to her unique genetic memory, which allows her to access the thoughts and experiences of her ancestors.

She carries the weight and the wisdom of generations and generations in her head. She’s never in a singular conversation. It’s kind of everything everywhere, all at once,” Anya told Variety. It’s not just wisdom. It’s noise. The voices that are infinite, intersecting, and creating her reality. Imagine never being alone in your own head.

All decisions made under the impact of echoes of the past, all the feelings refracted through a myriad of inherited views. That’s normal for Alia. There is no such thing as a simple conversation; it is stratified, disorganized, and impossible to comprehend. And yet there is one anchor in that tempest of thought which holds her in place. Her brother.

Alia’s Love For Paul Might Be Her Most Dangerous Weapon

Alia’s core is her relationship with Paul Atreides. Taylor-Joy says that it is only Paul who has ever made Alia feel like she makes sense. That emotional clarity, which is so uncommon in her disjointed world, is the basis of her loyalty. “And the one thing that she really feels most strongly about is her love and devotion to her brother, because that is the only person who’s ever made her feel like she makes sense,” she added.

Devotion, however, does not come easily to Alia. It intensifies. It consumes. It distorts. Her love for Paul isn’t just familial, it’s absolute. And in a world where authority already is blurring the boundaries of morality, such an uncompromising devotion can easily turn into something threatening. The fact that Taylor-Joy hints that Alia will take to different levels of insanity implies that her actions might not necessarily be in line with reason.

The desire to protect the one person who understands you, no matter the cost. But in Alia’s case, the cost could be enormous. However, for Alia, the price might be tremendous. As Denis Villeneuve keeps on examining the effects of power in this last chapter, Alia can represent one of its most terrifying concepts: that love, when taken to its limit, can be as dangerous as ambition. And on Arrakis, that could be the worst of all forces.
