James Cameron has given ‘Avatar‘ fans a major reason to celebrate, especially for those who want to get immersed in the bioluminescent wonders of Pandora. The legendary director, who already has four billion-dollar-grossing titles under his belt, confirmed at the Saturn Awards that a fourth instalment is a huge possibility, even as the franchise navigates post-release discussions after ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash.’
The threequel, released on December 13 last year, became the third successive title in the franchise to cross the one billion mark. It earned almost $1.5 billion worldwide against a $400 million budget, but fell short of its predecessor’s towering $2.3 billion haul.
James Cameron’s Latest Update on ‘Avatar 4’

While the decision ultimately rests with Disney executives, Cameron’s optimistic tone marks a shift from earlier uncertainty. “It hasn’t been confirmed,” he explained, adding that a fourth chapter will “very likely” move forward. He further emphasised that the audience feedback will play a pivotal role in shaping the story and in justifying such enormous expenditures on these blockbusters.
It is no secret that the ‘Avatar‘ franchise has long been one of Cameron’s ambitious projects. He planned it as a multi-film epic that tells a story across many years on the alien moon Pandora.

‘Avatar 4’ Production Status

Disney has already slotted ‘Avatar‘ 4 and 5 for a December release in 2029 and 2031. Cameron also previously confirmed that scripts for both upcoming sequels are complete, and portions of footage have already been captured during earlier shoots.

If Cameron gets the approval from Disney, one of the most exciting aspects would be seeing Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh playing a Na’vi character in both upcoming instalments. Besides, stars like Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are also expected to reprise their roles and bring compelling character arcs to the franchise in future.
As of now, while discussions with Disney continue, Pandora’s story appears far from over, and ‘Avatar 4‘ could soon bring audiences back to the moon that changed cinema forever.
