Having dominated the music industry, Billie Eilish might be about to enter a much different type of limelight. The Grammy-winning singer is also said to be in negotiations to play a lead role in a new film adaptation of ‘The Bell Jar’.
This would be her first major feature film acting role. Sarah Polley, the Oscar-winning director of ‘Women Talking’, is writing and directing the project. Had it been completed, the movie would unite one of the most identifiable voices in modern music with a strong and deeply personal literary classic. It’s an unlikely match that has already raised eyebrows in the film and music industry.
Billie Eilish Moves From Music To Movies

Eilish has already demonstrated that she can break creative boundaries. Her songs in ‘No Time to Die’ and ‘Barbie’ earned her Academy Awards. This solidified her presence outside the music industry. However, playing in a dramatic feature would be a new step in her developing career. Although it would be her first big-screen role, it would also not be the first time Eilish would act.

She has already featured in the Prime Video series ‘Swarm’, which was produced by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers. Her work there was unexpectedly disturbing and unforgettable. It also garnered huge awards like the People’s Choice Award for TV Performance of the Year. That small part was a suggestion that Eilish could be interested in trying storytelling on screen.
A complex literary adaptation, such as ‘The Bell Jar’, would definitely be a daring continuation of that trip. The singer is also increasing her film presence with the upcoming concert documentary ‘Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft -The Tour’, directed by film legend James Cameron.
A Classic Story Returns To The Screen

‘The Bell Jar’ is a novel about mental health and identity that was first published in 1963 by poet and writer Sylvia Plath. Now, it has become one of the most influential and discussed novels on the topic. The semi-autobiographical novel is about a bright college student, Esther Greenwood, whose glamorous internship in New York slowly transforms into an emotional crisis that is spiraling out of control.

The unvarnished discussion of depression and social pressure in the novel has been a favorite among readers from the time it was written. It is both thrilling and daunting to translate it to the screen. It is not the first attempt by Hollywood to adapt the book to the screen. Kirsten Dunst at one time intended to direct a version with Dakota Fanning in it. However, the project never got to production.
Today, when Polley tells his stories thoughtfully, and Eilish has a unique artistic vision, the new version may provide a new interpretation of the haunting story by Plath. For Eilish, it can be a way of something even greater, an opportunity to enter an entirely new creative identity and demonstrate that her narrative strength is not limited to music.
