At a time when CGI can easily take over blockbuster filmmaking, Christopher Nolan is once again reminding people of the unparalleled power of practical effects, leaving even veteran actors speechless.
When talking about Nolan’s next epic, ‘The Odyssey’, Tom Holland not only speaks highly of the movie, but he also sounds truly astonished. And not in the press-tour manner. This felt different, more like a fan attempting to digest what he has just seen.
Tom Holland Teases Mind-Blowing Practical Effects in ‘The Odyssey’

Tom Holland disclosed that there were a few scenes in the movie that made him fully believe that he was viewing the state-of-the-art CGI, only to discover that he was mistaken. A lot is said by that disbelief. We have come to a stage where viewers want visual deception to be digital. Therefore, when something appears impossible, the guess is easy: computers did it. However, Nolan doesn’t play by those rules.

The director, according to Holland, did these jaw-dropping sequences all in camera, by using careful planning and real-life execution. “There were certain sequences in the movie where I’m watching it, and I’m just sort of thinking like, ‘How on earth has he done that? That has to be CG.’ And then after the movie, asking him, ‘That was definitely CG, right?’ And he’s like, ‘No, no, no, that’s all in camera effects. Very planned, very prepared,” he told Variety.
It is the type of filmmaking that requires time, accuracy, and, to be honest, a certain degree of obsession. And that is exactly Nolan’s brand. You can nearly imagine the scene, Holland bending over after a screening, inquiring, That was CG, right? only to receive a nonchalant, almost disdainful No. That confident air? It is more violent than any explosion.
Why Practical Effects Still Hit Harder

Something is undoubtedly different about practical effects. You feel them. The heaviness, the feel, the threat, even from a screen. It is that philosophy that Nolan has based his reputation on. He always pursues authenticity, even when it is harder (and more costly) to achieve, like flipping real trucks or detonating huge sets. And with ‘The Odyssey’, it sounds like he is taking that philosophy to the extreme.

Holland’s response is a premonition of a bigger fact: audiences are craving spectacle that is real. Not only larger, but natural. And that is where practical filmmaking prevails. It is not about CGI’s denial. It’s about balance. About knowing when to believe reality rather than render. Nolan appears to know that more than most, and that is why his movies tend to stick.
‘The Odyssey’ will not be merely a sight to behold, according to what Holland says. The film will be the sort of experience that leaves you wondering what you are watching most desirably. And that is the magic of movies and the truth.
