‘Oppenheimer‘ is ruling the theatres. After much anticipation, the film has gotten highly positive reviews. And, most of it is because of Cillian Murphy‘s stellar portrayal of the historic physicist, J. Robert Oppenheimer. Murphy has proved to be the perfect Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s film.
Now it turns out that Nolan isn’t the only one who wanted Murphy as Oppenheimer. Nine years ago, someone else wanted to cast the actor in the role too. Who was it? Read on to know more.
Cillian Murphy Could’ve Been Oppenheimer Nine Years Ago
Almost a decade before Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, another TV show about the Manhattan Project also had Murphy in mind as a possible portrayer of Oppenheimer.
‘Manhattan‘ was a brief television program about the development of the atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico, that aired from 2014 to 2015 on the now-obsolete channel WGN America. Sam Shaw, the creator and showrunner of the series, and his wife Lila Byock, who served as one of the show’s writers, recently discussed its creation, in particular the casting of Oppenheimer, in an interview with Vanity Fair.
Shaw said, “We wanted Oppenheimer to feel both like he possessed a certain undeniable charisma, a presence onstage, but also that he was playing a different instrument. He needed to feel alien — or other — in some ways.” He also confirmed that Murphy was definitely on that list.
The role eventually went to Daniel London.
