The first look at ‘Dune: Part Three‘ has finally arrived, and while the scale, setting, and tone promise something bigger, there’s a much smaller detail that’s grabbing all the attention.
Yes, we are talking about Paul Atreides’ eyes. Sure, they’re still unmistakably Fremen blue, but now they look a lot different. As it turns out, there are a couple of pretty solid reasons behind it.
Why Paul’s Eyes Are Not The Same Anymore In ‘Dune: Part Three’

In the first two ‘Dune’ films, Paul’s eyes changed because of spice; that deep, glowing blue that marked his major change toward becoming Muad’Dib. But in ‘Dune: Part Three‘, the teaser image reveals something more.
Look closely, and you’ll see faint scars and lines around his eyes. They’re especially visible under the eyes and near the nose. It completely changes how he looks. And, the most surprising part is that no one else looks like that.

The Fremen all share blue eyes, but they don’t carry these marks. Only Paul does. That alone tells you this isn’t just about living on Arrakis anymore. You can even spot slight impressions from the stillsuit’s nose tube near his eyes.
The Scars Link Back To Spice Addiction And The Time Jump

If you’ve watched the earlier films closely, you know how long he’s been wearing that suit. It’s like the desert itself has started leaving its mark on him.
Connecting this back to ‘Dune Messiah‘ makes a lot of sense. There’s a moment when Paul reflects on his body, and describes himself as stronger, leaner, but also admits he has “a few more scars.” While most of us translate that idea visually, it’s not. The scarring around Paul’s eyes can be seen as a physical sign of long-term spice use, rather than just the blue color itself.

The timeline also explains why the effect looks more intense. Timothée Chalamet has confirmed in an appearance, saying, “It’s a nice character shift. I’m playing 15 to 20 years older” in ‘Dune: Part Three‘. So, it’s pretty clear that we will be seeing a long time jump.
In the book, Paul has already been Emperor for about 12 years. That means he has relied heavily on spice for over a decade. The visible scarring indicates just how much time has passed and how deeply that dependence has affected him.
And let’s not forget Arrakis itself. Herbert talks about “sandtracks”; those fine lines that form around the eyes from constant exposure to the desert. Chani has them, and it makes complete sense that Paul would too after living there for so long.
But if you’ve read ‘Messiah,’ or even if you’re just paying attention to how the teaser frames him, you can tell there’s something else going on. And if the film follows the book even loosely, then those eyes are setting up for something much bigger. Maybe, this time, he can’t escape this anymore.
