It seems that Elijah Wood is not just yet ready to hand over the One Ring or the curly-haired Hobbit who carried it. The 45-year-old actor, who first brought Frodo Baggins to life over two decades ago in ‘The Lord of the Rings‘ movies, has issued a playful decree: no one gets to play his iconic role as long as he is breathing and capable.
And honestly, the timing could not be more tantalizing. Why? It’s because Warner Bros. is deep in the forges of Middle-earth’s next chapter with ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ set to star and be directed by none other than Andy Serkis.
Elijah Wood Sends A Strong Message About Frodo Recast

In a recent interview with Sunday Times, Elijah Wood candidly laid down the law on recasting his beloved halfling in any ‘The Lord of the Rings‘ project. “I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo either as long as I’m alive and able,” he said.
Wood’s statement lands like a well-aimed arrow for fans who still love Peter Jackson’s original trilogy. Those films, released between 2001 and 2003, grossed nearly $3 billion, won 17 Oscars, and turned Frodo’s wide-eyed determination into a cultural milestone.
Amazon has already poured about $1 billion into expanding the franchise through its prequel series ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,’ and the upcoming ‘The Hunt for Gollum‘ is reportedly being planned as the first entry in a possible new trilogy.

Elijah Wood played coy about reprising the iconic character in the sequel film, which explores Gollum’s backstory between ‘The Hobbit‘ and ‘The Fellowship of the Ring.’
“I’m not able to officially say anything until it’s announced, but I will say I’m thrilled with the prospect of another film. It’s always a little nerve-racking when people talk about new movies for a world like Middle-earth,” he said. “Everyone gets a little protective and hopes it retains its level of integrity, but this story is fun, thrilling. There is a genuine feeling of getting the band back together.“

Wood lit up the idea of surprises, stating, “And I can also recognize what fun that is going to be — when you are in the cinema, and you see the hat turn around, and it’s Gandalf. Because I’m also a fan, and excited to see how it all comes together.”
Ian McKellen previously hinted at both Gandalf and Frodo appearing, fueling speculation of cameos and big returns. ‘The Hunt for Gollum‘ is aiming for a December 2027 theatrical release, in a massive push to expand Tolkien’s cinematic universe.
