‘Game of Thrones’ is about to venture into new territory once again. Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ is being developed as a theatrical film, marking the first time the A Song of Ice and Fire universe will be brought to cinemas in this way.
And honestly, this story feels almost tailor-made for the big screen.
‘Aegon’s Conquest’ Is About To Make Westeros Bigger Than Ever
The film would take place about 300 years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’, and would follow Aegon I Targaryen and his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, as they make their way to conquer Westeros with three dragons, Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes.
That instantly makes the project a big-scale project that TV would never be able to achieve. It may feature some of the most significant events in Westerosi history, like the fall of Harrenhal, the terrifying Field of Fire, the surrender of rival kings, and the formation of the Iron Throne. Those events with a big budget may be something special for longtime fans.
Could One Movie Ever Be Enough?
The main question isn’t whether ‘Aegon’s Conquest‘ will be a movie. It’s whether one film can cover the story. There are already rumors that the project may eventually be expanded to a trilogy, with the story continuing with Aegon’s arrival, the conquest itself, and then establishing Targaryen rule afterwards.

It would also allow for the start of the Targaryens’ eventual feud with Dorne. That could be a better idea. Aegon’s conquest is no mere series of battles. There’s also the interesting idea that the film could start with a look at Old Valyria, and then head to Dragonstone and the beginning of Aegon’s campaign. The participation of George R.R. Martin in the development of the project in its early stages only furthers the anticipation.
But more importantly, a theatrical release will allow HBO and Warner Bros. to make this different from the shows that are already on the air. ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ is not just another installment in the series. It’s a true fantasy blockbuster.
